I like the change for a little while but won't be able to keep it up with dark roots so I'll go back to light / medium brown with some blondish hightlights!

You look well in both. Lucky you.
However, I think the color in the first is the most attractive and complementary to your skintones.
But again, it's best to go with the one that makes you feel most beautiful.
