Thank you dear Newf for letting us know that Bjorn went peacefully with you by his side. You do not cry alone.

Newf. I am sorry for the loss of your good friend, Bjorn. He will rest well in his favourite spot near his family.

I won't go into the details of Bjorn's decline; it was mostly just the cruel effects of old age. My ex (and still co-owner of Bjorn) and I agreed that it was his time, and we had the vet come out to my house to administer the final mercy as I lay on the floor hugging him. She (the vet) kissed Bjorn on the forehead and said, "goodbye, baby" as the sedative took effect.

Bjorn now rests in the shade of a weeping willow that overlooks his two favorite places, the pond and the front porch. My ex's 5-year-old twins who have been around the Newfs practically since birth, came out yesterday. The little girl put flowers on the grave and promised Bjorn that she'd plant flowers there in the spring. Her brother, who for some reason doesn't like Newf slobber, overcame his inhibition long enough to kiss Gustav on the muzzle and tell him, "I'll be your brother now!"

Damn it. Now I'm crying again
It is kinder to let them go peacefully and being hugged by someone who loves them. But it is so hard to do it. So very hard.

The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything it's too late to stop reading it.

That's exactly how Marley went, except that I took her to the vet's office. The vet put a big blanket down on the floor, and I sat there holding her head in my lap talking to her and giving her kisses while he gave the injection. As horribly sad as it was, it was also very peaceful, and we took comfort in knowing that we had done the one last loving thing we could do for her when there was nothing more medically that could be done. I hope you are able to find some comfort too.

Uncle David - they are adorable.

I think all of us who have been through this will take comfort from these words. I so wish that our four-legged friends could live as long as we do.
