I actually thought Waldo's tongue made him part chow also. I googled it and came up with this. I was surprised to see that even Golden Retrievers (see photo)can have black or spotted tongues. I agree he does resemble a chow but I had no idea other breeds could also have the tongue spotting.

Gut, I'm sorry you've lost two pets this week. It is reassuring to know the kitten is romping around 'whole' and I have to admit I had no idea Henri was French. I always pronounced his name Henry, but now realize it was Aahn-Ree.

This picture was in our local newspaper showing the devastation the fires had on nearby ranches. I thought the picture was such a sweet catch for the photographer and imparts a heart-warming image in an otherwise tragic situation.

Wow! Thanks all. This is why I love the FORT. Henri's cage is out on my porch. I'm not ready to empty it out yet.
    Count your blessings!

My Mokie use to have a baaaaaad chewing habbit. We use to have to hide the toilet paper from him. And the first christmas we had him, we had to move the christmas ornaments from the bottom 1/3 of the tree, because he actually ate a glass bulb off of it while my mom was decorating the tree. He's mostly better in that regards now, except if he thinks it's human food... then you have to try and convinve him that the lotion you are putting on is not food. Also, anything remotely fuzzy will get put into his mouth as a chew toy. He seems to always have to have something in his mouth when I am trying to get his harness on him to take him outside. And the other day I woke up with 3 chew toys in my bed.

Talk about chewing. I was in the elevator the other day and a lady gets on with 2 Bouvier de Flanders. Now the elevator is maybe 4x3 or a bit bigger. There was just enough room for the 4 of us. I was taking stuff done to the recycling area so I just had on a pair of moccasins which happen to be lined and rimmed with fake fur. We are not talking just watching the floors pass when I feel a pain in my foot. Look down and one of Bouviers is very gently munching on my foot. I ask him what does he think he is doing and he just looks up at me for a second, blinks and goes back to what he is doing.

This is what they look like! Geogorous! I want one!

When I got back up Raz(my avator) was all over those moccasins, he sniffed, rubbed and eventually laid down on them and went to sleep. Guess he likes Bouviers!

Gut: So sorry to hear about the loss of Henri and the kitten. I know you'll miss them and our thoughts are with you.

Our Henry spent today sprawled out on the patio in the sunshine. There was a woodpecker about 20 feet up in the tree behind our fence and Henry just watched it and growled at it all day. After he had his dinner, he waddled off to bed and I turned the electric blanket on for him. It's not really cold enough for that, but he loves that thing and he's all snuggled under it now.

Waldo is a scary disembodied head because there is no brain in it. His theme song is from the Wizard of Oz: "If I only had a brain"

Actually the dog is super smart, but he's got the "man science" down pat: "If I act dumb, then they will not expect me to do anything and I won't have too".

That's my theme song too, MRD, even use it for a sig line on occasion--but I'm glad to let Waldo use it too.

    Re: For animal lovers

I took my 10 yr. old Min Schnauzer to the vet today because we've noticed his vision has greatly decreased. In retrospect thinking back to little things here and there, it's probably been going for a while but he was so good at compensating that we didn't notice until he started bumping into stuff.

The vet said he doesn't have cataracts or detached retina or anything else that would give her a definitive reason. I'd have to take him to an eye specialist for that but she feels almost certain surgery wouldn't reverse his condition nor would any medications help.

As long as we don't rearrange the furniture and he appears healthy otherwise, it will just have to become an adjustment for all of us. He eats and drinks well and otherwise seems fine. She recommended putting a scent on the doors he goes in and out of, especially since we have a pet door and I'm worried he might eventually not use it if he can't see it. Has anyone heard of doing this or have recommendations for scents to use? She mentioned lemon but I was wondering if anyone else has gone through this and what would be a good non-toxic scent to rub on the pet door.

As a puppy he couldn't see and a different vet said he probably had a form of eye degeneration puppy's can have but then suddenly he could see (we thought wow, a miracle) and for 10 good years he's had his vision although I wonder now if it's ever been 100%. I'm thinking whatever it was when he was a puppy has reared its ugly head but I'm glad he's had time to see the world and us. I just feel so bad for the little guy while he's going through his bump-into-stuff adjustment phase and he was such a lover of running on our acreage outdoors but we've put a stop to that for his own safety.

If anyone has any similar stories to share it would really help make me feel a little better.
