Thanks everybody! We are doing ok so far. We had him in a crate and the dogs were sniffing and wagging their tails! He didn't act like it bothered him. When we let him out he headed for an open window and hopped in. (It was 72 today so I had windows open.) He has eaten his food and right now he's in the basement snooping around, once he came up with dust bunnies on his cute lil' Pumpkin head. Dolly got a little crazy and went after him (tail wagging the whole time) so he ran behind the washing machine, but I talked to him and he came right out and let me pick him up. Other than that he has not tried to hide and seems to be adjusting ok.

Just for the record, we are not calling him "Bumpkin". He seems to respond to Pumpkin and I think it fits him so we are not changing his name.

Why, thank you! Being a proud mommy and all, I have to second you - they really are adorable. But then again, I find all cats adorable. My babies are called Stella and Saga, and given their chaotic upbringing, it's difficult to say whether or not they're sisters. I'm not sure if I've talked about this earlier, but both my girls spent the first year of their lives with 30+ other cats in a one-bedroom apartment. It's really a sad story: the old lady living there loved cats and thought she was doing a good thing taking in all these strays, but after a while the situation got out of hand, to put it mildly. The cats started reproducing like crazy - she either couldn't or wouldn't have them neutered - and she wasn't able to provide the food and litter boxes needed to give the cats a more tolerable existence. I'm told that Stella and Saga lived under the bathtub and survived on a diet of white bread and grass. Anyway, getting back to your question about whether or not they're sisters: the woman in charge at the animal shelter estimated that they were both born in June 2002 and since they look almost identical, I'd like to think they're sisters. They certainly behave like siblings do, alternating between being all cuddly and, minutes later, fighting and chasing each other around the apartment.

As sad as this story might be (sorry to go all heavy on you guys), there's a happy ending to it. All the 30+ cats living with the old lady now have loving homes, and Stella and Saga are both loving, trusting and vivacious kitties. Here are two more pics of them. As you can see, their bread-and-grass diet days are looong gone

Have any of you gotten your animals from an animal shelter? If so, I'd love to hear your stories.

The first night with Pumpkin went great! For some reason I just feel like I can trust him, he has been exploring the house and been no trouble at all. He stayed in the basement for the most part, then this morning he came up here with us. I was on the couch and he jumped up and plopped his cute little self right across my lap and stayed there for maybe 1/2 hour. The dogs are a bit jealous so they are getting some extra lovin' too. They just want to play, he will go where he can to get away from the dogs but he doesn't run off and hide. He's just really mellow and friendly, and I think he and the girls will work things out in no time. Now it's time to call the vet and get him checked out, at least he seems pretty healthy but he probably needs wormed and shots since we have no idea of his history. Since his moron owners left him out on his own I have my doubts that he's ever even seen a vet.

    Congrats Marley!

The only thing to worry about, and it doesn't sound like the previous 'caretakers' cared enough anyway, is if he's chipped. If he's chipped and it's scanned it's the vets legal obligation to return the animal to the person registered on it (as is my understanding) and the original owners still have legal claim to the animal.

Unfortunately, animals are still legally considered possessions (although I beleive there is legislature in some states changing them from chatel to 'companion animal').

But pumpkin is beautiful! congratulations, I hope it all works out for you guys!

Stella and Saga, what pretty names for pretty girls!

Regarding the microchips, do you really think that people who wouldn't feed their kitty, or taken care of while they are away, would actually spend the money on getting their Pumkin chipped? I think not. I wouldn't worry. Glad he's making himself at home with the girls.

I tried to take a picture of Mr. Tootles, but he became shy and hid.

Aw, misskitty, that's a cute pic. Is Mr. Tootles always camera-shy? I'd love to see another picture of him.

Speaking of cute kitties, here's a picture of my brother's 13-week-old ocicat kitten. Can you say a-d-o-r-a-b-l-e?

You should, Gabriel! That's my plan... get a huge house and fill it with books and cats.
