I read somewhere that: We don't find cats. Cats will find us.

Someday maybe a special cat will come along & find me & I won't be able to resist.

I find that true of any animal( well, cats and dogs) they choose us, and when they do, we are powerless.

My kitty Willow got outside today by accident for the first time since we've had her. I have no idea how she got out, because she isn't one to try to sneak out. But I heard a cats frantic meowing and I thought that maybe it was a feral cat that had wandered on the place. I went out the front door, stepped out on the top step and Willow came bursting out of the bushes and ran as fast as her little legs could carry her up the steps and into the house. Her eyes were just huge, her hair all bristled and her tail puffed out to twice its size! She was scared to death! She then proceeded to follow me around the house for about a half an hour, rubbing against me and meowing, then she finally curled up in her favorite chair and took a much needed nap. I think my fearless, curious, always into mischief Willow finally met her match.

Geez....if I bring home a new kitty, I get to go through the "We don't go outside!" convincing all over again.

I was lucky with both my boys. The first one was a huge fraidy cat. He didn't want anything to do with the outside world. My daughter took him out once and I didn't realize it. I looked up and he was plastered to the front window like "help". It was freaking hilarious.

The younger one was barely weaned when we brought him home. I never let him out and he never cared to investigate. He would stand in the open doorway but never leave.

I had a kitty who stepped out the front door and started walking down the stairs ... busy street. I saw her and yelled "NO! STOP! And she did and waited. I told her to :Get back in here! And she did! This cat was raised with a dog ... and just understood!

As for animals and emotions... my opinion is that people who say animals have no emotions, just don't experience depth of emotions themselves.
My dog knew exactly what was going on when her "big sister" became sick ... and she just adapted to the older dog's weakening situation and tried to help her.

The younger was very concerned for my well being ... and helped me through the loss.

As for talking to each other ... we speak the same doglish!

Cats are both prey and predator, so they can be very wary about outdoor dangers. My present two, brother and sister, started off in a home with a large outdoor enclosure and a self-service cat door. Exploring outside is really important to them but I would never let them loose. The compromise is individual walks on a harness on weekends. Fortunately they're both afraid, so far, of being on their own. The brother has pulled off the leash 3 times and every time bolted for the door he came out of. Once that involved going through a shut screen door (oh well, the screening needed replacing anyway). The brother is the self-appointed home protector. One of his important roles is keeping fierce outdoor animals from coming inside and eating my ill husband.

Our pets have all the emotions we have, but packaged from the viewpoint of their own species.

Yes, they do. My nephew had a goldfish at my parents house and I took care of the tank. I found out by looking on the web that goldfish produce a lot of ammonia and are one of the most difficult fish to keep the tank clean.
