By an odd coincidence, I had a cat named Dexter who looked just like your Dexter. Did your Dexter's great grandpappy homestead in Kansas?

My water cat caught his first mouse last night and left it alive in the tub for me to find, capture and release (behind the house of the boy who tore down my Halloween decorations!) this morning. I think his intention was to drown it, but I haven't been leaving water in the tub with my daughter home for break.

Last time I cornered a mouse one of my cats had caught it ended up in the bathtub. A good result, I thought, because it meant I could steer it into a waste basket and then escort it outside. But during the time I reached for the basket the mouse disappeared. The only place it could have gone was down the drain. Embarrassing, because the plumber has just come out to fix a clog in that pipe (that I'm pretty sure wasn't just a different mouse).

It was tough catching that little critter! He could jump so high, I'm not sure why he couldn't get out on his own.
Dexter just gets more decadently loveable every day. He slept beside my bed last night and came right up to me when I woke up to be stroked.

I wish they would event a sock( or boot) that would stay on! it takes me 30 minutes to put them on, and 30 seconds for them to kick them off

Latest update on Dexter... Minerva has decided to keep him. She can come and go through the basement window, but he hasn't figured that out, yet. When she disappears, he starts "vocalizing" for her. He's gone from peeping to trilling to outright whining like a dog. I really thought there was a dog in my basement last night. When she comes in she walks around vocalizing for him until she finds him and he vocalizes back. The difference between their voices is so funny. She meows like a cat and uses her "where are my kittens?" sound, and he makes his weird noises that are nothing like a normal cat. A couple of times she has straddled his back and held his neck in her mouth - not biting or fighting, just dominating. Then she licks him like she would her kittens. He's totally passive the whole time.

    Belle.jpg

This is my gal Belle. She came into the world on August 18, 1996. She came into my life on April 6, 2002. And she left this world this morning, between 3 and 5 a.m., by the vet's account. A pet's death hasn't hit me this hard since the early 90s when my dog I had since I was 5 died. She was the feistiest little thing and I will miss her take no prisoners attitude forever. I need to remember her attitude to deal with the other craptastic things that have happened this month. I'd just like to FF to January, please.

Oh PhoneGrrrl - my heart is so heavy reading this. Belle is so pretty. Was she ill? You take the time to do what you need to do - cry, be angry, be sad, time does not take away the pain, but lessens it to some degree and that hole in your heart stays there, although the edges get softer. Some day you will be thinking of something Belle did and you will again smile and even laugh. There will be times even after years have gone that you will cry, but then a smile starts again. Belle is at the Rainbow Bridge with my Mona & Joey and Doxies Simon, MRD's Rosie and Waldo, and so many others having a good time.

    For animal lovers

PG, I am SO sorry. Losing a pet is always hard, but I think it's even worse at the holidays.

Paul, thank you for your kind words. She had a thyroid problem that was medicated for 2+ years but suddenly took a turn for the worse over the weekend. It absolutely kills me that she was fairly okay yesterday morning but blind by the time I got home and couldn't even drink water. She slumped over into her water dish and I was on the phone with the ER vet ASAP. They did what they could and she lived a long happy life, nearly 17 years. I think she will be a great friend to Mona over the Rainbow Bridge, as Belle was capable of giving the side eye to anyone she ever met. They can do that together

ETA, thanks Crit. It's been a tough month on many fronts and the holidays haven't really helped.
