| Re: For animal lovers Regarding my dog, Oakley, and the cats... We got Oakley when he was 10 weeks old. At that time, we had between 4-6 cats, who would have been anywhere between a year and a few months old. We also had Tuckle, our rabbit, who was litter-trained and free-roaming, with a cage he was locked into on the floor at night. Oakley from the start got along great with the cats and the rabbit. His shepherding instinct actually came in handy. When it was clear that he was of a temperment that he would not hurt them, we used him to "herd" them when necessary. If one of them got outside accidentally, we just had to send him out and tell him "go get Ripley, find Ripley" and he'd sniff her out and shoo her home. When any of them gets in a tussle, he'll go nose them apart. When one of them attacks another, we tell him "go get Grover" and he'll go corner said cat, mouth him until he's spit covered but otherwise unharmed, and leave him alone when we say "enough". There have been less than one handful of incidents where Oakley bared his teeth or growled at any of them. They all were when he was given a treat and the cats tried to horn in on the goodie action. But we made it implicitly clear that this was absolutely, positively, without a doubt completely and totally unacceptable and he got the point. As a result, he tolerates them when they nose into his treats, but he'll eat faster and move around so they're forced to move themselves, losing out in the process. ![]() Oakley is a dream to have with other pets. When we first got him, however, we used to put Tuckle in a cage at night because a dog we had before Oakley was not as nice to him. Oakley got used to this so when we decided we could get rid of the cage altogether, Oakley was a little upset at this because he was so used to Tuckle being in a certain place at a certain time. He would follow Tuckle around and try to nose him back toward where his cage used to be. Eventually, he got over that. A prime example of how good Oakley is in this respect. This past summer, my husband let him out into our rather large yard. Jon let him be out there a while, then realized Oakley was barking and carrying on, and looked like he was digging. There was also a squirrel out on a power line, giving Oakley hell. I said to my husband, "maybe he's got something pinned out there, better go check." What Oakley had was a nest of tiny baby rabbits. He was digging in FRONT of the nest, and barking like crazy because, in his mind, they didn't belong out there in the yard, they belonged IN THE HOUSE. He was trying to tell us, "Hey, I don't remember these guys, and I don't know how they got out here, but you better come put them back in the house where they belong." The baby rabbits were totally unharmed, and we settled Oakley down and kept him away from the spot until the mother decided to move them herself, out of the yard with the crazy herding dog. ![]() Now, we did have a dog prior to Oakley who was NOT good to cats. We ran a video camera when we were gone once and came home to footage of him dragging our first kitten down from a stack of boxes by her head. She was fine, but we discovered him being inappropriately rough with her another time, too. He was tragically hit by a truck before he was a year old, so we never got around to seeing if we needed to train that behavior out of him. But there was a difference between him and Oakley - we suspect the first dog was not purebred Shepherd as we were led to believe. And we know for a fact Oakley is a pure Shepherd. There ARE risks of unpredictable behavior in mixed breed dogs. Mutts can be wonderful, absolutely. But there are breeds out there that are not very good with other animals, and if those are mixed in, you can end up with a dog that won't get along well with cats, rabbits, birds, etc. I don't generally recommend bypassing a rescue/shelter for a dog usually. But if you have small children, or other pets, you should at least consider a dog from a rescue group that adopts out specific breeds. Just suggestions. Of course, we could have just gotten VERY very lucky with our dear Oakley. |

Henry had every right to be offended and I probably would have said something to the kid. That's not nice at all. The Dorito kid. I love it. Reminds me of Blazing Saddles.Does he get dip too?

If we hadn't been in a parking lot, I would have let Henry take him on! ![]() Gabriel - LOVE the Dorito pics. Henry needs to visit y'all - he and Joey could hang in the condo and eat! ![]() Fierce - I think it's great that all of your pets get along so well. I loved the part about Oakley herding the cats. I have a friend who has a Corgi and two little kids. The Corgi herds the kids around ![]() Storm is over. Electric blanket is back on and Henry had a bite of hamburger steak for dinner. He's now gone back to bed.
