Sorry to hear that Joe. When I was younger I encountered a few that passed away, but haven't since. Although for all I know the neighborhood cats could've gotten to them before I did. Still even seeing just the nests makes me sad, every year they try so hard and every year it falls.Originally Posted by joeguy
I just took the chick to an animal rehab specialist's home as the initial volunteer who would come ended up forgetting about it because I was too far (although she said this after she bragged about how she would go drive hours to save wild animals, but when she found out I was about 20 minutes away, she opted not to. Maybe she has her reasonings). So my family and I took care of it all last night and my this chick is smarter than I thought. Completely pampered and treated like a King. I'll miss him though.
Thank gawd my boss decided to have me come in at a later hour and thank gawd I decided to ditch class last night so I could discover the chick on time.
Mrs Cwebb, I experienced somthing similar last year with a nest of Carolina Wrens that built a nest atop my gutter. It is hard to watch the baby birds die. Will you give us an update when you have one?
Here are my two monsters. Simon is a Jack (Parson) Russell Terrier and was with J. when we met, so he's now our dog. Henry is a dachshund we rescued together.
Like speedbump, I walked upstairs to find them in the rarest of moments--sleeping together peacefully on the ratty old armchair in my home office. And I snapped the photo before they could jump off the armchair.
I typically like bigger dogs (and I also like cats), but J. is allergic to cats and likes small dogs, so we have small dogs.![]()

Its doing well. Turns out the animal specialist had a lot of other birds in her home that she rescues and takes care of. The bird seemed fine to me and she didn't remark about its conditions, so I'm assuming its doing well. It was real active and lively too. The specialist feed it some more as soon as I was getting ready to leave. I think it'll do fine, but I'll miss the little guy!
I did take some pictures too just for memory. Enjoy.

Phat, you dogs are adorable! So did they cover themselves with the blanket?
Speedy those are some fabulous looking cats...I don't know much about cats, but Maine coons must be a gorgeous breed.
Mrs. C, thanks so much for posting the pictures of that sweet baby. I'm so glad to hear there are others who care so much about the baby birds who run into trouble. I tried taking care of a baby starling once, and he lived a little over a week, but suddenly died. To this day, I still don't know if it was due to me, or just his fate. I also had trouble finding someone who would take him.
The other day I kept hearing what I thought was a bluejay squawking. I kept looking out the windows trying to figure out what was going on. After about an hour, I finally went outside to investigate, and I noticed there were ripples in our pool. A baby mockingbird had fallen in, and mom was squawking like crazy. I got him out, and fortunately, after a little while, he fluffed his feathers out and hopped/flew away. Obviously I need to get proficient at bird talk, because she was definitely calling, "Help, help." I'll remember this for the next time, though.
One last thing. We've had a hummingbird nest right outside our back door for years. Two years ago, a strong wind blew her nest off it's little perch, and she never rebuilt it. But I just noticed yesterday she's back! We're so excited. I've got a great vantage point from our family room, so I'll take some pictures when the babies hatch and post them.![]()
Mrs. Cwebb -- you're good people!
Phat -- your boys are too cute.![]()

speedbump, your cats are adorable! My neighbor has cats like yours.
phat, your dogs are cute too...gotta love those rare moments!
Mrs. Cwebb, I'm glad that the bird seems to be doing well. It's great that you cared so much about him.
roses, I'd like to become proficient at bird talk as well. It would be nice to know what those birds in my backyard at home are chirping about.
A few years ago we had a robin's nest in our pine tree and the nest was built fairly low on the tree, so we got to see the robins in their nest. I would post pictures, but they're back at home. We still have robins coming back every year, but haven't yet seen another nest.
Thanks guys!![]()
I came close to keeping him myself, but I know I won't have the time to give him the proper attention and care he needs. I'm sure the experts will do a good job taking care him. Yeah, when I arrived at the expert's home, there were a lot of other birds. I would say anywhere from 20-30 birds all over the place, so I think he's got some company.
I was telling Texie about some hamsters we had fostered for our neighbor's rescue. Mama is the golden and white one and the babies were black and white with gold on their faces. They thought dad was all black.
Oh what sweet little bundles of fluff, Veej. I do love my rodents
