lildago, maybe Dexter has never seen stairs before, and doesn't know what to think. teaching them to do down stairs is harder than going up, at least for puppies I've had. When he does start eating, it will probably be easy to teach him to get downstairs by himself. A treat 2 steps down will work wonders, I'm sure. I bet after a week or so he will be fitting in great, anyway. I'm always sorry for the grown animals that have to find new homes, as it's such a big adjustment. But to you for taking the big guy; too many adult animals end up staying in shelters because people demand a youngun.

There's a couple of new pet sites: http://www.catfessions.com and http://www.dogfessions.com. You send in a 4 x6 postcard about a secret about your pet or one that only your pet knows. It's like postsecret for animals! Every dogfession or catfession that is received provides $1 to help sheltered animals.

    There's also http://www.girlfessions.com, http://www.rockfessions.com, http://www.pugfessions/com, http://www.dogvice.com, http://www.teenfessions.com, http://www.askaspinster.com

    Re: For animal lovers

I had an odd animal encounter today. My business partner, her 5-y-o twins, and I were doing a survey on a residential property; one which Michele and the kids had been to before. The clients (not home) had a Lab named Titan, who was tickled to death to see them again. I was grumbling about working Sunday and so I just went about my business while they played a few minutes. About a half-hour later, I was up near the house when Titan finally noticed me, and he started raising five kinds of hell (maybe six--it was pretty hectic.) I can usually charm any civilized dog, but Titan was having none of it. The kids were off somewhere else, so I don't think that he was protecting them The next thing I know, my partner's little girl was running up and yelling "No, Titan! It's OK!" The dog looked a little confused, so she yelled it again, and he trotted over to her (keeping an eye on me, I might add!) That's the first time that an almost-first-grader ever saved my bacon As a post-script, Titan did eventually warm up to me.

    Re: For animal lovers

All of our dogs are extremely protective of children, even ones that they don't know. A couple of years ago a little boy (maybe 10 years old) who had just moved in up the street from us knocked on our door and asked my permission to use our yard to access the lake behind our house to go fishing. All the dogs were inside at the time so they sniffed around him then went on their way. I told him it was fine with me but asked that he bring a parent down with him so he wasn't alone. He said he would and as he left, two of the dogs slipped out the door with him. It wasn't five minutes later that I heard the dogs howling their heads off and I went out to find that this kid had just decided to head to the lake and had subsequently fallen and sprained his ankle on the embankment. My dogs were both by his side, one still howling, the other licking his face when I got down there. I have no doubt that little girl did indeed "save your bacon" Newf

Ha! That was my first thought too.

Thank goodness for the 5 year old Newf, or you might have been food of the Titan.

    Re: For animal lovers

Jeez, animals are weird. Boo Boo for some reason decided last week to start going #2 not on the litter box. (Thank GOd still peeing in it!) Therefore I have been putting her in the 'little room' at night while Im at work. So, I know she 'goes' early every morning, after I get home, but guess who gets trained? I go in the room and sit, and brush her and pet her, and then when it looks like anything is about to happen, sit her in the box and give treats after she performs. Now, every time she has to go potty, she still won't go in the box, but comes and gets me before squatting down, so I can put her in the box and give up the treat after.

Actually I can't figure out what might have caused this anyway, except that Boo Boo's recurrent eye infection came back around the time the litter box problem arose. The eye problem was taken care of ina couple of days, but I have to wonder if poopie on the floor is punishment for putting in eyedrops. If not, if it's because Boo Boo is starting to get old, or what. I'm just glad she only doeas it 1x a day.
