Re: Regional Dialects/Odd Sayings

there are so many British terms that I love: "take the piss" (giving you a hard time as in "im just taking the piss") "daft" "dodgy" "git" "slag"

ok, these are turning out to be more words than phrases but i could go on for days. i'm such an Anglophile. I want to live in Liverpool just so i can be called a Scouser. I think "scouse" is the cutest sounding word to describe a dialect EVER.

I'm guilty of both the Chester Drawers and the Lookie Yonder and I've gotten teased quite a bit about the "lookie yonder" one too.

And I'm also guilty of saying "It's hotter than blue blazes". Paula Deen said it on her show the other day and my daughter looked at me and said: "she says what you say".

I've never gone to "make groceries", but I'm usually "fixin' to" go get groceries.

So how many of you know what a Polecat is? I came out with that one in the car not long ago and my daughter swears she's never heard me say it before. But where I grew up, we had polecats and not skunks.

Re: Regional Dialects/Odd Sayings

Oh - I soo know what a polecat is.... EWW! I remember riding in the car with my Grandfather and he would say "I smell a polecat" and then I would smell it too..... Again... EWWWW Years later, my parents had a small black and white dog and my grandfather insisted on calling the dog "Polecat"... The dog didn't stink but his nickname ended up being Polecat and my grandfather NEVER let that dog in his house.

I think I've posted everything I've got in the early days of this post, but I enjoy reading it. I'm taking a grad course called "Sociolinguistics" this fall and may quote from here in my papers.

Re: Regional Dialects/Odd Sayings

I remember a few things my Granny used to say that you never hear anywhere anymore...one of them is using "hit" for "it" especially if it is the first word of the sentence. "Hit was on the chair last I seed it".

I have also noticed something else odd--some of our Southernisms also are used in certain British dialects. For instance Ive heard "idden it" instesd of "isn't it" quite a bit on tv interviews. I've always said and heard that, and have to make a real effort to say "isn't"; usually I don't bother and go ahead and be a hillbilly.

I tend to say idden it too. I've noticed that the year we've spent in SC has definetly broadened my accent.

I don't really care if anyone thinks I'm a hillbilly, redneck or what. This is how I was raised and as I'm not in broadcasting, I'm not worried about how I sound. Nearly everyone that lives here talks like I do or worse, so I don't worry about it anymore.

I say viva la Redneck. There is not another group nearly as colorful as the Southern Redneck and they are definetly entertaining.

Re: Regional Dialects/Odd Sayings

Didn't look back to see if this one has been posted before or not. NOt sure if it's really a dialect or regional saying or just using the wrong context.

Do you get out of the car or get off the car? Where I grew up and it was - example: "Get off and go see the movie times before we park."

My parents say drink medicine even if they are talking about a pill - " I drank my medicine at 4PM so I'll drink another one at 12."

Sounds funny to me now because I don't hear it as often.

Re: Regional Dialects/Odd Sayings

Speaking of the "-idden" pronunciation....I've heard people who were saying "fixing to" actually say "fidden ta". Gotta love it!

Never heard of either, PGM.

I've always heard "get out of the car" and even when the kids had liquid amoxycillin, I would always say "time to take your medicine" even though I could have said, "time to drink your medicine".

Along the lines of bag/sack, soda/pop, etc. we have always said lollipops where I have heard people refer to them as suckers. So which one do you all say?

We call them suckers and we ask that they be put in the sack with the coke (not soda, not pop, but coke. Doesn't matter if it's a 7-up or Dr. Pepper, its still a coke. As in "what kind of coke do you want?")

Here's another. In the winter do you wear "thermal underwear" or "longjohns" ?
