Years ago we had a crew laying the blocks for the foundation of our house. The lead guy just kept on talking about a motah boad, which we assumed was his very southern accent saying motor boat, but still sort of strange conversation considering the circumstances. Periodically you would hear him yell out something about the motah boad. After spending a few hours hearing this, I went around to where they were working and discovered that what he was saying was shorthand for, Put some more MORTAR on the MORTAR BOARD. In case anyone doesn't already know, the mortar board is usually a large sheet of plywood where they keep mortar to put the blocks together. Someone is constantly mixing mortar (cement) and bringing it to the various block layers.

To this day, when we see a building going up we wonder who's driving the motah boad.

What we were actually doing was debating taking the Christmas tree down. We had just put it up that morning and it had NO decorations on it (they were stacked up in boxes in the living room after having just come out of the attic) and we were trying to decide if we should continue decorating or just take it back outside for a few days. NOthing like worrying about important details when someone in the family dies.
Let me just add that this was the same grandmother that I fell in the grave with after the funeral (strictly by accident, not design, believe me! That is an afternoon forever burned in my memory and not pleasantly either). There is no end to the klutzy things I have managed to do in my life!!!!! for today's installment, go read the stupid things thread.

This is just too much! She actually had frozen cakes ready to go? sorry this is getting off thread... didn't mean to do that. Back to Regional Dialects/Odd sayings: Where in this country do people say MELK instead of MILK? I've heard it here in MILWAUKEE or as some people have said MELWAUKEE

If I have missed that story, please direct me to it. If it hasn't been told, for heaven sake, go to the Koffe Klatch and tell it. I really don't want to miss that one.

I didn't get a chance to read through this entire thread so if any other Saskatchewanians have already brought this up...sorry.
In Moose Jaw especially, but I've heard it throughout the province a hoodie is commonly called a 'bunny-hug', but I'm not sure why. Growing up I only new it as a bunny-hug and thought that was its normal name, as we got older we stared to call it a hoodie as 'slang' but it is and always will be a bunny-hug to me.

Re: Regional Dialects/Odd Sayings

Not sure what defines a region.
I've never understood how some British dialects (not sure which ones) add an r to the end of words when there is no r within miles. Like the word "idea" for example. "Idee-er"? I don't think so. Idea doesn't have an r in it. I don't get it.

The "r"'s come from Boston, where they are not pronounced
I've always noticed it on names especially-- Amander, Samanther, Pameler, etc.

I read an article once that said that the R's migrate from Boston to Texas where they "warsh" their clothes and have Orl rigs to pump orl from the ground.

I've run into one here in SC. Everwho. Instead of whoever.

"everwho left their shoes in the middle of the floor needs to move them".

Oooh, I actually like that one! Sounds like something quirky that I'd pick up and use...
