| I took a southern quiz a while back and don't remember my score. However, I wanted to pop in and say that I absolutely hate it when any woman calls me "sweetie", "sugar", "honey" or "darlin" or anything else along those lines. I don't care if it's a southern thing. I hate, hate, hate it!!! |

| It's always been fun talking to my Baba, who's from the Ukraine. She always says to "open" and "close" things instead of turning them on and off. Like the t.v., the lights, the stove burners. And she can't say certain letters. For instance, she'll say to put the flowers in a waz....vase! Sometimes she just gets us baffled and we have to try and figure out what it is she's said. It's just too cute sometimes. ![]()

She's 71 now so she gets away with it...impossible to get mad at a sweet little old lady who is smiling at you the whole time. My point is, I was guilty of doing that very thing (not so much "dear", more "honey", "sweetie", and "darlin'") so I blame my mother for her bad influence but I have improved greatly over the past while and save the endearments for my husband and daughters. It IS a very bad habit.

Personally I don't mind if someone does it to me. It's a darn sight better than "HEY YOU" ![]()

) But then again, Scandinavians tend to keep to themselves and wouldn't dream of addressing a perfect stranger in an even remotely nice or semi-affectionate way. Heck, most of us wouldn't dream of addressing a stranger at all! I could just be starved for any type of affection - or even attention! - from strangers, I guess, even if it's of a strictly linguistic nature. We're a pretty unfriendly bunch, at least compared to Americans who, at least in my experience, tend to be more sociable and open towards strangers. Anyway, regarding the "dear"/"sweetie"/"hon" thing. I remember the shock I had when I, nineteen and fresh out of high-school, arrived in London and was repeatedly called "luv", "sweetheart" and "doll" by the (male) taxi driver driving me from the airport. At first I thought he was coming on to me! I wasn't sure whether to feel flattered or, given my then rather vocal feminist views, indignant. Very confusing.

| Well I'm a sucker for an English accent so I probably wouldn't mind the terms of endearment from someone with one ha ha! French, Italian, English, Australian - I love to hear people speak with those accents. My main gripe is with women my age or younger, not elderly ladies. |

| I think it depends on the way it is said, and who is saying it. Most of the time I don't care if someone calls me "dear" etc., especially if they are older, or if it is done with a nice tone of voice. However, it can be used very condescendingly and in that case I usually answer beginning with "Well, dear (honey, sweetie) or whatever they just called me....to make a point. I don't know why I bother because it usually flies over their head. | |
