Everyone I know calls it a bathroom, unless we're out trying to be fancy and then we ask for the "ladies room."
So, I got at least two guilty parties correct! I've used one too-- YEEK! But really, we usually call it a bathroom too, unless, same as you we're "out" somewhere!

I also thought of something else about being Southern-- why use one word when two will do? You know, "hose pipe" instead of hose (the garden thing, not stockings!) or "ink pen" instead of "pen". Then again, the way we pronounce "pen", people won't know whether we need an "ink pen" or a safety pin if we don't specify.

That applies to names also. Billy Jon of Survivior is a prime example. I have some cousins where the whole family is called both names: John Richard, Edna Lucille, etc. This was in every day conversation, not just when the parents got mad.
Yes, I have used an outhouse many times.

AND the difference between us northerners and you southerners with the names is you use two names normally, and as noted my mother always would use PAUL GERARD! when she got mad, so what do you do down south? Entire name?

There are names that we here from the US that I've never heard a Brit called. Briana is one that I have never heard and another is Randy, for obvious reasons. On another tack, Demi and Kylie have appeared in the last 15 yrs, Miss Minogue and Moore have a lot to answer for!

Exactly!! I am canadian too and I say Tuna... Its obvious!! Like if you are going to have like Salmon or Pickeril for Dinner, you wouldnt say Salmonfish or Pickerilfish...

except one thing I dont say is "eh"... I am canadian too... like I think it is one of the most annoying sounds / words / anything ever... and people always say "well you obviously say it but just dont know it"... well i dont... never have.......

neither do i like "y'all" half because listening to april on Big Brother 6 killed me... and half cause I dunno... With speaking, I am weird that way!

I had to go digging for this thread, but I'm really curious. Living in New England, grew up in Ohio... thought I had caught all the linguistic differences after 25 years. When I tell people here I'm going to Africa "this summer", they all correct me - You mean "next summer"? When I've said "this summer" to people back home, they all get what I mean. Can anyone verify that this is a regional thing?

Gut, I was born in Tennessee, lived there for 23 years and have lived in Ohio for the last 32 years. (Yikes, I just disclosed my age ) I would normally say "this summer" if it was actually the summer season. I can see it going both ways. This time of year I would say next summer.
