My stories have always had digressions no matter what age I have been.

In GA we turn them off and on-- but your post made me wonder, can anyone remind me where I might have been when I heard "close" the light when you are finished? I'm thinking maybe some part of Canada?

My Polish-American grandfather (who was born in and spent much of his childhood in Scranton, PA, before the family moved to Milwaukee) used to say "outen the light."

I've heard Paula Deen say "cut the lights off" on her show before. Maybe only in parts of GA do they say that.

I'm in Tennessee and still can hit the floor in hysterics when, for example, my grandson says with his redneck accent "Go te'al mah Daddy to cut that light on!". You know an accent is deep when you are from the next state over (Arkansas) and you notice the accent. In Arkansas we turn lights on and off, provided, of course, you live in an area that's done got that thar eelectricitee.

I've heard "close the lights," I think from my grandmother, who was a New Englander.

Now, does anyone else here wait on lines?

I've heard people talk about "waiting on line". And I think these people were from NY.

Each state has it's own unique accent, which is why we notice them more. I can usually always tell which state a person is from by how they talk. I'm not right all the time, but I can hit it most of the time. But the southern accent is different from state to state and sometimes region to region in the same state.

I have had people tell me that I absolutely cannot be from Florida because I have a Southern accent. Well last time I looked, Florida was actually the Southernmost state.
And not all of Florida is Miami and Disney.

Waiting on line is definetly a Northern term. Southerners "stand in line"
