I'm sorry, Gut, for the hurtful comments your mom made. I agree with Famita, though, that sometimes as we age we have more and more unfiltered moments. I see it time and time again, with my 86 y.o. dad. It's caused a lot of friction over the last decade, but those who know me, know I rarely hold my tongue. I'd definitely discuss this with her and let her know it was inappropriate for her to talk about you to this gentleman and also, to let her know how much it hurt you.

You have no idea how much I needed to hear the kind words from my friends here. Thank you.

Guttmutter, It is unfortunate that your Mother doesn't see you as I do. I can only base my opinion by what I read, and that is this... You are a friend to everyone you meet. You are a caring, kind, helpful and compassionate, friend, neighbor and teacher. You are funny and witty. You have inspired me, and everyone that see's your artwork, with your talent and creativity.
You are a fantastic mother to your children. A great sister.
And the most important... You are a loving and forgiving daughter.

Ditto Gut-to what everyone has said here! you know what my mom has said about me back when I had lost weight - her response was - you have about 20 more lbs to go right? Haha! Moms - you gotta love them. Well, at least you can't kill them!

Oh, Gutmutter, how sad that that's the way your mother chose to encapsulate your life story. You're such a vibrant, caring woman - and are so thoughtful of your mother in helping her with her health issues.

To let her know you saw it, you might reply with:

    Dear Mom,

In the future, I'd appreciate it if you didn't discuss my private life with others.

    Love,
    Your man-hating, frumpy, uber-conservative daughter

Hahahaha! Thanks for that! I'm so grateful for the response here. I was really feeling down this morning and now I feel cherished.
I told my older daughter about it in an e-mail and she wrote back the most insightful, compassionate note I have ever gotten from her. I'll be keeping that.

Fortunately my mother never figured out email. My mom made me crazy by phone. Nearly every evening even if she had anything new to say, .... or not. Funny, but for the longest time after she was gone I would reach for the phone to call her every time I had something new to talk about. Because I knew that as soon as she got anything from me she would immediately call my sisters and talk about it. Sparing me three extra calls.

Gutmutter, I felt a pang in the pit of my stomach when I read your post this morning. We all want our parents' approval but at our age, the truth of the matter is that we no longer need it. What you do need is to keep your well full, and the only way to do that, is by staying true to yourself.

Excellent point. Her response to my e-mail saying it was hurtful was to ignore it and change the subject. C'est la vie.
Now that Labor Day is over we're back to full grind at school. My 5th and 6th graders are delightful. My 7th and 8th graders are already entitled and rude. It's like a switch gets flicked between 6th and 7th grade.
