    Gift ideas for a 6-year-old?

Does anyone have any good gift ideas for a 6-year-old boy? My friend's having a small dinner for family tomorrow and we're invited. I have no idea what he likes (Dora? Pokemon?) and I haven't been able to get hold of her. So...any generic ideas? I was thinking along the lines of a book, DVD or a toy...Sigh. I'm sure I'll end up getting him something he hates (that's what gift receipts are for). I wish she'd call me back!

I like K'nex. They're easy enough for a boy that age to put together and it allows kids to use their imaginations. My son played with them for hours.

At first I read that as Kleenex!

I LUV K'nex too (and can play with them for hours) and I'm 28 years old!

Lord knows they are not big fans of blowing their noses at that age... JMO!

Can you imagine if I showed up with a big old 3-pack box of Kleenex?!

I was able to track down the mom today and she said he loves Matchbox cars...so I'm going to go look for some Matbox car sets for him. Thanks everyone for your suggestions. (A I went to the K'Nex site and I'm pretty sure I want to get one for me, too! They look fun!)

OK, so maybe I'm a "bah-humbug", but those look like great "under the bare foot, ouch, say a bad word, these #@* things are everywhere" toys.
