Is it just me or what? Does anyone have any idea why a parent would feed their 4 year old overweight child nothing but Fruit Loops for breakfast every morning? Do you think there is anyone who still doesn't realize the Fruit Loops don't offer much, if any, nutritional value to the child, plus, it's setting bad habits for an overweight adult. Just wondering......

It's probably easier than listening to the child scream if they don't get their Froot Loops. Some parents live with the mistaken idea that the kid should decide what they want, and the parents just have to obey.

I remember my mother telling about a similar experience with my grandmother, who used to keep me when she and my father worked during the week; I will admit to having been "The Golden Child". I would go home with them on weekends. Apparently, my mother couldn't get me to eat breakfast at home. She told my grandmother about it, and my grandmother asked her if she had asked ME what I wanted!! My mother was dumbstruck and incredulous!! I was a tiny, very girly child. I never remember getting anything like cereal at my grandparent's home. I remember a lot of oatmeal, and prune juice. I don't think I've had oatmeal since my grandmother died when I was 7! I cannot make myself eat it, no matter if I try. I've not ad prune juice, which I used to like, in years. Apparently, I liked the meal, because I lived through it with no remembered complaints or tears.

I was treated like the next successor to the throne....their princess. I don't remember any power struggles. With my own parents, it wasn't nearly as cushy a life!!

I know!! drives me crazy When did all that change. I was one of four children, and both my parents said we eat what we are given or we go without.( I am sure that is why I am not a picky eater) My dad frequently reminded us this was a house, not a café where we put in our orders.

I didn't bring crap into the house that I didn't want my son to have. He, too, knew the deal. To this day, he is a fan of Grape-Nuts with raisins! I didn't play that "cater to" mess. It's here, prepared....eat or don't. And mine is an "only".

That is how I was with my children. Only good stuff( although I never recall even seeing fruit loops then) and no choices like on a menu

That's just it. This child loves oatmeal, eggs, toast, grits, applesauce, etc. She never complains about food and loves veggies too. So, why put junk food in her breakfast bowl? It boggles the mind. You have a child who loves to eat healthy food and you sabotage her with sugar on top of sugar. Don't get me started.........

On a better note. Thank all of you guys for prayers and good wishes about my cousin who is going into assisted living. Today could not have gone any better!!!!!!!!!! It was as if she forgot she refused to go the other day. I drove her by the doctor office and went in and got a piece of paper with the address for the assisted living. I told her that we had to go in and meet with the people who would be administering her medication and providing her physical therapy. So, I drove over and she was fine with it. The intake rep was nice and asked her questions about herself. I had already given her a typed biography about her and her interests, habits and challenges. She explained they would give her her meds and therapy to help her get her strength back. She wanted to know if she would stay there and how long she would stay and we explained that it depended on her progress and the doctor would evaluate her periodically. I promised to care for her cat and she cried, but she seemed okay.

She is looking forward to getting better and I think she will be relieved to not be lonely and to have people to talk with and to help her with things. They provide her three meals a day, plus snacks and do her laundry and administer her medication. I'm so relieved this went well.
All the paperwork can't be processed until Monday, so I don't think we can get her in until then. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

ECM . . . did you ever find out if the gift was received by your intended party????

Debb, so glad it worked out for your cousin.

AZ, yes, I did. I took the direct approach, as suggested and sent her a FB message. She responded almost immediately by saying she returned to her condo on Friday evening to find a package waiting. Her fiancé arrived at her home at about the same time and they were able to open the gift together. It was the first engagement gift they had received and they were very excited. She thanked me profusely, so I am relieved the gift arrived and it was appreciated.
