I don't understand congratulating somebody on their divorce. That is congratulating them on a failure. OK, I could see that coming from a very special friend who knows you EXTREMELY well

Yay, I got called in for an interview next Monday for the job I did the work sample for Wednesday! I must have done ok on the sample despite the tricky math question.

I tell you what, that math question has been haunting me. I've been thinking about it every night before going to sleep and then this morning I woke up at 5:00 and knew how to get the answer. I only wish I had figured it out the day of the work sample.

I'd never send anyone a Congratulations message on a divorce. But if I had been in MissScarlett's situation, I wouldn't have taken offense. The underlying message was really "thinking of you" and that's what I would have taken from it.

Etiquette-wise, regarding an engaged couple, congratulations are to be offered to the man and best wishes are to be offered to the woman. I always thought it amusing as congratulating the man sounds like "how lucky you are that you found someone who would marry you," and best wishes to the woman sounds like, "good luck to you - you'll need it."

That was traditional Emily Post etiquette anyway - maybe well wishes are gender neutral these days.

Yes - you should never say "Congratualtions" to a bride because it implies she was lucky to find someone. I always thought it was funny you weren't supposed to say that to the bride, but it was ok to say it to the groom.

Given that there are so many same-sex couples (married & engaged) in my family and friends, all are wished congratulations AND best wishes. It's a win-win!

In my sleep I drool blood on my pillow. It leaves stains and right now that's all that's bugging me about the post-surgery. I'm okay with everything else.

I think that etiquette rule of not congratulating a bride is out of date. If a bride's going to get bent out of shape because I congratulate her, that's her problem.

Same here - I think it's funny that it's okay to imply the man was lucky enough to find a woman.

Even if people are sticklers themselves for the "old-fashioned" etiquette of "congratulations" and "best wishes," I wouldn't think anyone would take offense if misapplied, as the intention is all positive.
