I'm mid-Mass. and we have a grace period until around noon today before the wind and rain start pounding us. I'm taking advantage and using power while I have it... hard boiling eggs, steaming brocculi, brewing and storing coffee, finding as many containers as I can to store water. I'm about to take a thorough shower and then fill the tub with water. Better safe than sorry. I do have some trees close enough to the house to make roof damage a worry.

I hope those trees close to your house will hold up, Gut. Let us know how it's going. I should probably be using this little time left doing productive things like that since I am by myself at my sister's place and she is in London. They are now saying 5,000 in New Jersey are already without power. Oh, and I meant East of the Mississippi -- I definitely need some coffee before the power goes. How is everyone else making out?

Luckily it's predicted to be warm enough that I won't need to fire up the woodstove, although that's an option if needed. My busy-ness is really more nervous energy, trying to remember what I wished I had done the last two times we went three or more days without power in recent storms.

    Gut,

You are one of my favorite people to worry about! Hang tough!

Hey chrisg, thanks for checking in. Sorry you had to be evacuated from your neighborhood in NYC. So far we are sitting tight. The winds and rain are picking up. Power is still on, thank goodness. The worst should be around 8 pm to around 3 am tomorrow so we will just have to sit tight. I invited my husband's cousin to come here with her husband and 4 year old if they evacuate her area. She is about a 20 minute drive away and just slightly south of us. She said she will accept the invitation if they need to leave. Hopefully I will still have power if she comes. Stay safe, everyone in Sandy's path!

So far here in Northern VA, this is the most boring hurricane ever. We had worse rain and wind from thunderstorms this past summer.

JohnnyK - Go find a karaoke bar and knock yourself out. IMO, the best ones are those small neighborhood places where the same people go every week. It becomes like a little family and everyone encourages everyone else, no matter what they sound like.

I have been evacuated from Chelsea in NYC and came to CT last night. There are no subways running in NYC today and the Stock Exchange is closed and I don't remember either of those things ever happening before in anticipation of a weather event. They are saying that every state west of the Mississippi will at least be affected with high winds. Stay safe everyone.
Everyone in Sandy's path please stay safe! I am in MI and we already have the ridiculous winds. Sitting on the 26th floor of an office building is a bit unnerving when you can hear the wind pushing on the building (and yes, can even feel the building sway)! Higher winds in store for tomorrow. I may have to stay home.

So far things are going well here... we seem to be in the only lull in the East (knock on wood) but that could change. No power outage, not really much wind, a mild rain. Watching news is mind boggling... lots of images of the storm non-stop.

My daughter has always loved the female race horse, Zenyatta. Her hubby just took her to Kentucky for a long weekend, and she got to meet Zenyatta and have some pictures taken with her. Pretty special event for my daughter - not sure how impressed Zenyatta was, but Donna did get to feed her some peppermints.

Moms are always happy when their kids' dreams come true . . . even when the kid is in her 40s.

I hope you all in the NE are faring well in Sandy. I'm constantly refreshing on the still live news sources out of NYC. My lil sis lives in the city but she's sooo damn far uptown she still (as of this late hour) has all services. I heard mid afternoon from my friend in DE that all was well, but she's NOLA born & bred, so I don't worry about her. I'm still concerned for my family in PA. Pittsburgh was getting some mean rain (or precipitation of some sort) tonight and it's heading upstate, and my Detroit fam will get something too.

Just stay inside until it passes. And then, worry about downed lines. I know that sounds concern troll, but it's just plain concern. A lady in NYC got zapped to death. I had live wires down a few months ago from Issac. It's not worth the risk.
