Every now and then, I need to call France (sometimes Morocco) for business not often enough, though, to pay for the international-calling option on my cell contract. I use an international calling card (which I bought at 7-Eleven or CVS or some cheap-o place), and it works just fine with my cell phone. Since the calling card goes through a domestic 800 number, it's treated as any other domestic call.

I used to buy a phone card at Costco and I could use it to call many countries - if you live near a Costco, you might check out that option. It was a good value at the time.

Not in THIS lifetime, Samsung.....NOT in this lifetime!! I'm now paying attention to a Samsung 3G phone. It could be possible in a couple of weeks!
I have AT&T and the S3 is $199 with a two-year contract. The unlocked ones are much more expensive.

Debb - If you have a smartphone, there are several apps that allow you to call different parts of the world (similar or better rates than a card I think). If this is a one-time thing, a card is probably your best bet. If it's a somewhat frequent occurrence, the app might be more convenient. For example - VoX Mobile This one has a 60 min free trial version you might be interested in.

The S3 I am looking at is, currently, going for $179. I am still learning, so what does "an unlocked phone" mean?

That means you don't have to go through your cell service provider to get it. People buy them that way if they would have to pay a big penalty for breaking their contract OR if their provider doesn't offer the model they want.

Well, as I live and breathe! I just read up on what an Android phone is; people tend to talk about them like they are a lesser product, and that's not the impression I get. People tend to, almost, apologize for having one.

I've had a blackberry for years. I switched to an Android, but switched back after 2 weeks. I found the 'droid to be heavy, and it had a major flaw. If you copied music to it, it switched the songs in each album to alphabetical order. Yep. Try listening to the soundtrack from a Broadway show in ALPHABETICAL order. I think they have workarounds now, but I'll probably not try another Android.

I have a friend who calls Africa (Kenya) a lot on Skype - through her computer. I don't even think it costs anything. Any Skypers who can clarify?

Thank you all for the info. I have decided to get a calling card. If not, it's about $13.00 per minute from a regular phone line! Not feasible.
