I'm trying to think of how to break the ice on the topic with him. Any suggestions?

Sounds like it's time to deliver some baked goods as a thank you for clearing the driveway.

Maybe that and a horse-related toy for the boy. His mamma loved horses.

Clarification please. Do all 3, that is the grandfather, the student father of the child and the little boy all actually live there ?

I'm just thinking maybe you could make him/them a meal ... Chilli, stew or something cold weather appropriate. Also when you see the little boy, you could help him make a snowman

Don't mean to be hokey, but I have long said that when one's intentions are pure and towards helping others in some way, there seem to be angels on your shoulder. Same doesn't happen when you are seeking the winning lottery numbers.
This is very true and in Gutmutter's case, there is an ARMY of angels looking over her shoulder. I happen to know some things she's done for other people that she has not shared. She is a rare person: a truly caring and dedicated individual who thinks of others first and herself last. I am truly priveliged to have been allowed into her circle of light and friendship.

I'm sure this is true of all of you. I'm not special in any way.
To clarify, I don't think the father of the boy is in the picture. The family across the street from me is a boy and his grandfather. The boy's mother - the grandfather's daughter - was my student.

You can say what you want Gut, but you are very special.

Take over some baked goods like someone mentioned and just say: I think I may have taught your daughter in school.
