    Wow. My daughter (age 9) is into American Girls. We don't do the dolls, but she reads their books (and wishes over the catalogs they send out ). I hadn't heard about this doll's story... had to go searching for more, too. So I read she's a limited edition companion to the modern girl of the year, and she and her mom were homeless for a time after her dad lost his job and then left them? Seems a little heavy, but I can see how good things could come of her story.

    I started it as a topic in the Current Events thread. I'm not as offended as the people who are making a big deal out of it. All of their main dolls with book series are dealing with hardship - escaping slavery, the depression, orphaned, etc. And as you pointed out, this is a companion doll, not the main character. On their site I couldn't find any mention of her being homeless. I guess you have to read the books to know that. So it's not like they're pushing her as Our New Homeless Doll! They try to be sensitive to the issues they write about. I remember sobbing when my daughter and I read the Addy books together.

    Heard on television this morning that the Texas State Fair is going on in Dallas. I thought that I had heard of all of the deep fried foods until they mentioned DEEP FRIED BUTTER! Can anyone shed any light on this horrendous sounding treat? I just can't imagine.
