I think I would opt for the motel option for a better night's rest and park the car next to the motel office under the bright lights. I would never be comfortable enough in my car to get a decent rest for the long drive if I was at a rest stop. But maybe the rest stops in CA are different than in SC? I won't even stop at a rest stop to use the facilities - EVER.
I'm with you. I think a rest stop is a bad idea.
I think if I was trying to spend a night alone in my car, I wouldn't get an ounce of sleep-- I'd be up all night worrying. I'd go with a motel.
