    Did you know that pirates wear eye patches so they can go from the bright sunlight on deck to the dark cabins in the ship without waiting for their eyes to adjust (they simply switch the patch to the other eye when they go below deck!)

    Re: Did You Know?

    Pretty cool about the pirates

    As we all know*, there are 43,560 square feet in an acre. Why such an odd-ball number? Long before feet were used for land descriptions, the unit of choice was the chain, which is 4 rods, which is 66 feet. An acre is ten square chains, which is very convenient for calculations.

    66'x66'x10 = 43560 sq ft

    *I had an employee once who had a two-year associates degree in surveying. He could NEVER remember the number, and when I'd ask him ( ) he'd pull out his trusty HP48 calculator and use the built-in conversion, which would screw him over every time. What Mr Hewlett and Mr Packard knew, but my field animal never figured out, is that one must use US survey feet, not international feet, to get the correct conversion.

    Did you Know: A study conducted by the Wrigley Chewing Gum Company concluded that most people will spit out a stick of gum within ten minutes of chewing, regardless of long-lasting flavor.

    Well that just proves it then, I'm not most people. I've kept a stick of gum for amounts of time that could be considered unrealistic. Know Violet in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory? I could be her if I was slightly more obnoxious and a fame whore.

    Did You Know.....Icebergs in the Antarctic area sometimes have stripes, formed by layers of snow that react to different conditions.

    Blue stripes are often created when a crevice in the ice sheet fills up with meltwater and freezes so quickly that no bubbles form.

    When an iceberg falls into the sea, a layer of salty seawater can freeze to the underside. If this is rich in algae, it can form a green stripe.

    Brown, black and yellow lines are caused by sediment, picked up when the ice sheet grinds downhill towards the sea.
