Re: New Year's Resolutions

A very wise member of FORT sent me this. I wish I had written it. I feel like I could write it. It echos how I feel EXACTLY.

I thought I'd post it here because some of the resolutions some of you have made seem to echo the sentiments expressed here.

I wish you all the same destination as the writer of this has reached.
And I wish you all a very happy, content and wonderful 2008!!!

"The other day a young person asked me how I felt
about being old. I was taken aback, for I do not think
of myself as old. Upon seeing my reaction, she was
immediately embarrassed, but I explained that it was
an interesting question, and I would ponder it, and
let her know.

Old Age, I decided, is a gift.

I am now, probably for the first time in my life, the
person I have always wanted to be. Oh, not my body!
I sometime despair over my body, the wrinkles, the
baggy eyes, and the sagging butt. And often I am
taken aback by that old person that lives in my mirror
(who looks like my mother!), but I don't agonize over
those things for long.

I would never trade my amazing friends, my wonderful
life, my loving family for less gray hair or a flatter
belly. As I've aged, I've become more kind to myself,
and less critical of myself. I've become my own
friend. I don't chide myself for eating that extra
cookie, or for not making my bed, or for buying that
silly cement gecko that I didn't need, but looks so
avante garde on my patio. I am entitled to a treat,
to be messy, to be extravagant.
I have seen too many dear friends leave this world too
soon; before they understood the great freedom that
comes with aging.
Whose business is it if I choose to read or play on
the computer until 4 AM and sleep until noon?
I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of
the 60&70's, and if I, at the same time, wish to weep
over a lost love ... I will.

I will walk the beach in a swim suit that is stretched
over a bulging body, and will dive into the waves with
abandon if I choose to, despite the pitying glances
from the jet set.

They, too, will get old.

I know I am sometimes forgetful. But there again,
some of life is just as well forgotten. And I
eventually remember the important things.
Sure, over the years my heart has been broken. How
can your heart not break when you lose a loved one, or
when a child suffers, or even when somebody's beloved
pet gets hit by a car? But broken hearts are what
give us strength and understanding and compassion. A
heart never broken is pristine and sterile and will
never know the joy of being imperfect.

I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my
hair turning gray, and to have my youthful laughs be
forever etched into deep grooves on my face. So many
have never laughed, and so many have died before their
hair could turn silver.

As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You
care less about what other people think. I don't
question myself anymore. I've even earned the right
to be wrong.

So, to answer your question, I like being old. It has
set me free. I like the person I have become. I am
not going to live forever, but while I am still here,
I will not waste time lamenting what could have been,
or worrying about what will be. And I shall eat
dessert every single day. (If I feel like it)

Re: New Year's Resolutions

Yoga is an exercise everyone can do at their own level. Our muscles were meant to be stretched and that sends really good vibes to our brain. Start out slow and enjoy the energy it brings you. As for having a New Year's Resolution? I resolve to never repeat the mistakes I made in 2007!

Maybe that's been my problem. I want to enjoy yoga, but I find it too taxing. I also find that if you're overweight a lot of the poses are really uncomfortable. There are also some where my head and face are too pressured that I know it's not good with my high blood pressure. Also my balance isn't what it needs to be so I use a chair to balance. I have to bring a gardening foam kneeling pad because I can't put a lot of pressure on my knees. I'm a mess! But I do enjoy parts of it, so I guess I need to find a teacher/video that isn't too stressful or put together a routine of my own that I can tolerate.
Happy New Year! I'm starting it off with a fruit juice fast. Wish me luck.

Gut, there are actually different types and I had found one(sadly can't remember the name now) that was perfect for those of us that can't do all the poses. I have trouble with them too. And I cannot sit crosslegged on the floor. It just about kills my hips and knees to sit like that, so I would sit with my legs stretched out in front of me. I know someone that does something called chakra yoga and you don't even get on the floor. I'll ask her more about it.

Re: New Year's Resolutions

Happy 2008!!!

My New Year's resolutions that I started already and seem to be working!!!

1. remember that it is 'ok' to say 'no'. If you don't want to do something, don't do it.

2. Try and verbilize your feelings, starting with 'I'. Even if it is something someone doesn't want to hear, they appreciate the truth. It is better than my other habit of running away from difficult situations.

Gut, I recommend taking a class with a teacher. The class I was in had a wide arrangement of people and ages. The teacher alters poses to fit people's special needs. If you have knee issues, they will give you a modified way to do the pose. The more you do the poses the better your balance will get, plus we all have our days of being really rocky. Good luck this year!

This is a great one! I find I forget this a lot. I may have to adopt it as well.

I also forgot to list this one earlier: I'm going to get more sleep this year. It's so much easier to go to work when I'm not exhausted!
