Well, he may say he doesn't care, but you can bet that deep down the fact that you're making his birthday special counts. What a great idea to combine Christmas/birthday with one big present. I wonder why we never thought of that. My daughter has a friend with a Christmas birthday. She has her party in the summer. OT - I'm getting feedback from people I knit cool scarves for and sent way back. You kind of forget once the holiday is in full steam, but they are appreciated. Always a good feeling. I got my youngest the movie, Big, with Tom Hanks and we watched it last night. Great flick.

    J. and I gave her mother jewelry and her father original, artist-commissioned pencil-and-ink sketches of American domestic passenger airliners (due to his love of all things that take to the sky).

Among other things, my parents received a yearlong subscription to People. (And, yes, it pained me to rot my parents' brains, but, eh, what are you gonna do?)

I gave J. the best gift of all: I gave her a day-off from housework. No, no, no! Ha ha! Just kidding, just kidding. J. seemed happy with what I gave her.

Together, J. and I made a number of donations to The Jimmy Hale Mission, the Mercury News Holiday Wish Book, the Seabirds Adopt a Penguin/Save a Penguin Program--don't ask, long story --Coast to Coast Dachshund Rescue, and TEARS Animal Rescue.

Those were the best gifts of all--the gift of a second chance.

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas, and all your gift recipients loved their gifts!

I have enjoyed reading everyones' posts here....Gutmutter, I was especially touched by your post regarding the painting you did for your secret santa. That brought a tear to my eye.

As I mentioned upthread, my daughter had made a special coffee cup for herself, and then accidentally broke it, so I made another one for her to replace it. When she opened it, she said in amazement, "Oh, Mom, you are my hero!", then promptly burst into tears. I'll remember that for the rest of my life.

My husband plays guitar. His amplifier was given to him by his brother-in-law/best friend who had cancer and passed away 6 years ago. The amp is probably 15 years old and finally quit working. He's waiting until after the holidays to buy a new one since it would kind of blow our Christmas budget right now. The old one has alot of sentimental value for him. He was teary as he put it away in the attic. Well, I hauled it down and am having it rewired for him for Christmas. I hope I can keep it a secret until then!

    Woah, I remember this thread!

That's wonderful that you had the amp rewired. Those are the best gifts, the ones that take time and care to accomplish.

I'm pretty excited about a gift I got for my daughter. She went ice skating for the first time a few weeks ago and has been dying to take lessons like one of her friends, but we just can't afford another pricey one hour/week activity. But I signed her up for mini-session so that she will go every day for a week just before Christmas. They timed the lessons so that they have a long free skate directly after the lesson, so she can stay and skate as long as she can stand it. I made a cute little letter to put on the tree and I can't wait to see her face when she opens it.

For my brother, who normally gets me super cool and muy expensive gifts because he can afford to, I got him tickets to go see INXS. My brother has been an INXS fan since their first CD out and was always mad jealous that I got to go to the Rockstar tapings. He doesn't know that I got the tickets but he is keeping that day totally free to hang out with me...little does he know it will be at in INXS concert in a casino.
