    Fantastic, Closet ! I am no expert ... but your Sunday run is more than a 10K !

    Just the distance is an accomplishment ... but I'm just curious ...do you have a record of your times and/or how many miles per minute?

    I may have missed something but are you training for a special event ... or are you the special event?

    I don't know how runners do it! I can only run for short lengths of time. I either get out of breath or my shins start killing me. For a while I was trying to short burst of light jogging when I was walking to increase my endurance but it didn't seem to be working.

    I wish I could run instead of walk because I could finish my exercise faster and burn more calories!

    I'm not a runner. I get no enjoyment from it at all, and I hate the way you feel afterwards. But I LOVE to walk & do it at a pretty good pace. I walk darned near every evening during the Summer & as long as possible in the Fall. I enjoy the sights, even if it's just in my neighborhood, & can go as long as time permits. I can think things out, & make decisions, & get rid of stress. I feel refreshed & good afterwards.
    In the Winter/Early Spring, I've tried other indoor replacements: stationary bike, walking in circles on an indoor track, but they just seem like monotonous labor.

    I just wish I knew a way of carrying on during our long, cold, snowy Winters. Anything outside is pure torture to me.

    I'm a walker, not a runner, but I'm nothing at the moment, waiting for full recovery of my lungs. I guess I could walk if I had my inhaler along. Swimming I can do just fine.

    I love to speed walk, and I have always walked too fast for anyone walking with me. If it's cold, I hit the treadmill, which I hate, but - I am still walking

    Are you racing? I do about 3 per year, though have only managed one half-marathon. A full marathon is on my bucket list.

    When I started out with running again over the last few years it was just to improve my health. I didn't have any goals and I NEVER expected to be doing these longer distances. I have not been doing races, but someone put a bug in my ear late this summer about trying a half-marathon and I'm seriously considering it now. I think I will hold off until next fall though. I need some time to build more confidence at longer distances.

    I was aiming for 10k on Sunday, so I mapped out a route that was just a bit longer in case my planning was a little off!

    I am SLOW right now. I'm averaging about 10 min 25 sec miles. I was talking to another "soccer mom" near my age the other day and she considers 8 min miles slow! I think I'm going to do some research into healthy ways to improve my speed without injuring myself. I think it should be pretty easy to start tinkering with my average speed at the 10K distance.

    I'm with you Fanny, I *HATE* treadmills. I will resort to using one when it gets too cold, but I won't be happy about it and I will not be able to do long distances. It is just sooooo boooooring!!!

    I cannot get the hang of walking on a treadmill.

    I used some recumbent exercisers in therapy ... the kind that exercise both legs and arms ... and I really loved them.

    closet ... I have volunteered at all kinds of races ... including marathons and even a triathlon and in various capacities. Runners are nice people.

    Gosh I don't think 10 min miles is slow!! I was happy with my 12 min miles!! LOL. I started running a year ago and then just stopped. A year ago Last December I ran a 5K and was very proud of myself but then I was done with it. I started the Couch 2 5K but stopped at Week 5. Instead I ran and walked alternately til I felt comfortable running at my pace.

    Way to go to all the runners!!

    Okay -- this might seem stupid that I'm excited about working on what's a holiday for most people. Here's the story:

    As many of you know, among other things in my mish-mosh of a freelance business, I've been doing after-school tutoring with Korean and Korean-American kids for the past 15+ years. In their culture, a tutor isn't just a "band-aid" for a bad report card. He or she is often a long-term mentor.

    Well, two of my tutees (with whom I've worked since they were 9 years old) are now high school juniors -- 16-year-olds. I've worked with both girls in a variety of areas: ESL, reading and writing skills, PSAT/SAT prep, French, ASL (American Sign Language). These young women and I have gotten to know each other pretty well over the years. When they entered high school, we talked about "doing a field trip sometime" (they know about my adult business ESL "school without walls" program). So far, it just hasn't happened. But it will on Monday. Yay!

    So, Monday is a holiday for most U.S. Americans. Schools are closed. Public libraries (where I usually conduct tutoring sessions) are closed. On Veterans' Day, tutoring is usually cancelled (and, as a freelancer, I lose out on income). My husband's company doesn't honor this holiday, so he has to work. So, this year, I was preparing for a lost-income day with hubby at work.

    Well, my sweet-16 tutees (while in their Sunday art class) talked about -- hey, let's ask Ms Ellen if we can do a field trip lesson! (They'd already talked about it to their moms, who love the idea.) I'm thrilled. Not only because I get to do something fun and different with these young women, but also because I'm not losing much-needed income (still recovering financially from hubby's cancer surgery early this year).

    They've never taken public transportation here. In Korea, yes. Here, no. So we're going to take the trolley downtown, have brunch in a French café (the owner is from Marseilles -- the one girl who studies French will get some French conversation practice), and then do a walking tour of the historic sites in San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter and Asian-Pacific Historic District.

    So I'm thrilled at doing something different on the holiday.
