We've already had the sunscreen discussion! He's against it. Or at least he was until he went to the school Renaissance Club Carnival and his feet got sunburned. We told him to imagine what that would feel like all over his body. I think he got the point!

    Re: Share your good news

Ooh, lots of good news here since my last check-in. Congratulations and good luck to everyone!

I'm very relieved today because whatever bug our new kitten brought home and spread to the rest of the tribe seems to be running its course. I thought I would have to take a bunch of them to the vet today but I don't.

Also I had to have a difficult talk with my dad yesterday but it went really well after all.

Sometimes it's the greatest blessing to just be relieved of fears.

Wise words, lei. I'm glad your talk with your dad went well. I find it very stressful to talk to my parents about things on which we disagree more now as an adult than I ever did as a kid living at home. Then, it was just easier to tell them what I thought without fear of hurt feelings or misunderstandings. Now, I actually care about what they have to say and take our disagreements to heart much more than when I was young. It's hard to criticize or even simply suggest that they change something, and I worry myself sick when I have to have those conversations. I'm glad yours was easier than you thought it would be.

You tell him your good friend Gutmutter just had 3 "pre-cancerous" thingies taken off her face cryogenically today and it hurts! He said it almost certainly is a result of my years of lifeguarding without sunscreen as a teenager. It isn't just about getting sunburned. Skin cancer is something like 20 times more common than it was in our generation because of the thinning of the ozone. I went to a lecture about it and wish I had the specific statistics. I tell my kids, nieces, and nephews that going out without sunscreen is like having s*x without a condom. I had a friend who died from skin cancer on his foot. He was a construction worker and always tan, but when he went to the ocean on his days off he would get sunburned on his feet.
The GOOD NEWS - all the other moles, spots, rashes, etc. are nothing and he took care of the 3 that worried him. So yea!
    Count your blessings!

    Re: Share your good news

I wanted to share my recent celebration of enjoying fifty years of living on this wonderful planet. For those of you who might be afraid, it was the most enjoyable day I think I've ever spent! I never thought I'd make it this far, and I'm hopeful I get another 10 years to enjoy.

Lifeguards should have to sit in a 55-gallon drum of sunscreen, and use a periscope to watch the pool.

I'll pass that suggestion on to our supervisor, Newf.
famita - I'll second that! I'm finding 50 to be absolutely delightful. I'm wishing you WAYYYY more than 10 more good ones.
    Count your blessings!

Newf, you sound like my little sister!! And pretty much like I did to my older sister last year!

Gut, I only try to aim for 10 years at a time!! And I'm planning on enjoying these 10 years a lot more than I did the last 10!

Interesting concept. I'll focus on enjoying my 50s. Everyone keeps telling me they wish they were 50 again. I have a lot of older friends.
    Count your blessings!

    Re: Share your good news

Well, it's not amazing news like the rest of you have, but school's out for summer! And just as quickly as it started, another amazing year was over.

And on Friday, I was getting my yearbook signed, and when I got to Craig, he put this in...

Hey you! Friend, I will miss you!
    Love, Craig
    . . . . . . . . . .[Turn page...turn page again]
Actually, my message is longer, I just thought I would make fun of your obscenly short message...Well it's been awesome getting to know you as such a close friend, all those fun car rides and our funny conversations. I will miss that smile, and your great personality.
    Love,
Oh wait I already put my name...Oh well...Craig

And I don't know why, but, after reading that, I'm suddenly happy for him that he's getting this chance to live his dream, even though I wasn't happy for him over the last 3 months. We got our orders for communication with him yesterday. We can send postcards, but we need to watch what we say, as the older classes always read the postcards aloud to each other before they let the rightful owners get them. They can't be long, as they only have about 5 minutes a day to read them. And we can't say anything about missing Craig, or wishing he was here, becuase that increaces the liklihood of hm dropping out by a very large percentage. While this upsts me, I know it's all he's ever wanted, the second thing he ever said to me was that he wanted to be in the military. He got it. I'll get to see him at Thanksgiving and Christmas, which I guess isn't that long from now. I'm gonna make it through this. And I'm going to be a better person for it. That makes me happy for some reason.
...And the strange boy continued to weave in and out of her life, leaving her with a sense of wonder and amazment, but also, a feeling of loss, knowing that life might never be the same again.
