I have no special advice for you Maude, but I want you to know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.
When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down "Happy." They told me I didn't understand the assignment. I told them they didn't understand life. - John Lennon

    Re: Talk about your troubles

I have a Baker's cyst on my left leg. It bothers me from time to time but I've seen an orthopedist about it and they didn't think surgery was necessary for it. My darn leg is bothering me today. It feels like there's an air bubble trapped under my left kneecap and if I could pop my knee it would feel better. I tried standing on my leg and rotating the joint, kicking my leg in short flicks from the knee, and stretching but none of that has helped. It gets so annoying dealing with something like this. I can't afford to keep going back to the orthopedist, especially since they don't seem inclined to do anything about it.

I had started walking for weight loss a few years ago but had to give it up because walking was making my knee much worse.

Get a second opinion from a highly recommended doc?

Yeah, I think I'll have to get a second opinion. It'll just have to wait until I get some bills paid off and can afford to go to a specialist.

Thank goodness I have health insurance so I only have to pay a co-payment, not the full amount for a visit, but even the co-payment is more than I can afford sometimes. It's even worse if I have to go to the emergency room. The co-payment for that recently went up to $100. I told myself I wasn't going to go to the ER unless I was bleeding or having a serious problem and then hardly a month after the fees went up, I cut my hand really bad and had to go to the ER. Oh, the bad timing! Couldn't have happened a few months sooner when it was only $50 to go to the ER.

In the meantime, you need to start seeking out doctor recommendations. No sense in waiting until the last minute to do that. I'm guessing you'll get plenty.

Is there a teaching hospital near you? My attorney once told me that "you want a young doctor, and an old lawyer". Medicine is always changing, and the law is very, very old!

    Re: Talk about your troubles

Since I have a health plan, I'll have to go to a place they refer me to. I'll just ask to see a different doctor next time.

I wish I had a headstrong friend to go with me. I'm too timid to be demanding with doctors. I don't want to come across as a difficult patient or hypochondriac, but I think they don't take me seriously, either, and they tend to minimize my concerns instead of treating me. I felt that way with my asthma doctor, too, and stopped going there, even though I'm still having trouble with my asthma. I'll have to find a different asthma specialist when my current prescriptions expire.

Pikachu -- I wonder if you might need a different type of specialist, other than an orthopedic doctor. If you have arthritis in your leg, a rheumatologist might better be able to address the problem. Another option is a physiatrist, an orthopedic doctor who is not licensed to do surgery. They often have pain-relieving ideas and methods which do not involve oral pain killers. I also wonder if you might find some info on the internet about the best type of specialist to see for this condition.
I wish you good luck and the relief of your pain.

    Re: Talk about your troubles

I can't find a job I lost my job in March and found another job pretty quickly but it sucked royally so I had to quit. So now I'm temping, it's something but still not a full time job. I've had a few interviews but no offers. Sometimes I don't even get an interview which is disconcerting because I have 16 years of experience in my field. I really hope I find something soon because the temp job I'm on now I'm filling in for a girl on maternity leave and she'll be back in a couple weeks.
