    I can't really use a network monitoring tool - it has to be on this server itself, which is what's proving to be the problem.

    hmmmm. determining a reboot is easy in win2k. you can use the task scheduler to have an application launch when windows starts, (or in this case reboots). So what you really need is an application that will automatically send an email when the app starts. I don't know of any app that does this, but it wouldn't be hard to write. A small vb app that uses CDONTS would probably be the easiest to write.

    Here is a link to a page that has lots of code samples for auto generating an email. I found them on a quick google of CDONTS. I have no affiliation with them at all, but the code looks right. I've used several of these techniques in different situations.

    I tried an application that used CDONTS, and it didn't send a mail - it didn't give an error either, which is strange.
