Because if you leave nothing, they may think you forgot. I don't want them to forget WHY I did not tip much.

But I only leave $1 if it was bad service. I want them to know how I felt about not getting refills, being ignored, having food thrown down the table to me, having to go FIND someone to refill our glasses or get our check, etc.

My husband has been known to leave 50 cents on the table for really bad service.

Very good point. Makes a LOT of sense, and it's what I'll do, now.

I LIKE it that you can always learn something here!

Although maybe this should have been obvious!

We tip the girls @ Sonic. Some of our friends think it's silly.

I ALWAYS tip at Sonic. I mean, come on, they have to carry food wearing roller skates. I've seen too many wipe out and someone always has a bandage on a skint knee. Besides, they still wait on me, bringing out my food and going back for the ketchup they forgot, its not like the drive through at McDonald's.

We tip the pizza delivery guy too.

They roller skate in your hometown?

    They don't roller skate here.

I can safely say that I have visited Sonics in 2 states and several cities in each state and everyone of them have skating waitresses and waiters.
It's kind of cool. Except when they wipe out, then I feel really awful for them.

That's why I always tip at Sonic. I don't think I could be a food server let alone one on roller skates. I am just too klutzy. Last time I skated was about 28 years ago and I sprained my wrist falling. I was a Sr. in high school. Since then, I don't even want to go near a roller rink.

They used to skate here. I had one wipe out under the front of my truck. Luckily she wasn't hurt. I think they leave it up to the carhops at our Sonic.

I thought about you this morning, I stopped by Sonic for a smoothie and tipped the guy. You are not the only one.

Thank you Jewels and marybethp for this link. I'll be using a shuttle service from the airport to my daughter's apartment when I visit her in a few weeks. I wasn't sure what to tip them and found the answer at that site.

    Re: Tipping

I was glad to see that about the tip jars too. But if I do get a very nice barista, I do leave a tip.

I was also glad to see the policy regarding US mail carriers. I have never believed in tipping them. I already pay their salary in postage and taxes. And I know for a fact that they make more than my husband does. I do however usually give them homemade treats and a card at Christmas. I'm not a total scrooge!

    Re: Tipping

I tip the Sonic kids too, since they have to carry the food out--no skates around here though, or in any I've ever been to.
As for airport shuttles, I always tip $1 a bag.
And tip jars--I hate them, and rarely ever put anything in there.
I have found the Truth and it doesn't make sense.
