| My hometown of Sudbury, Ontario Canada is famous for: Being formed by an asteriod 1.85 billion years ago. We refer to it as the Subury Basin - or the Nickel Basin. The asteroid 6 to 12 miles in diameter slammed into Earth, "The moment of impact was so great that it carved out an area 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) deep," *The space rock rolled through the area and cracked our planet's crust, producing a mother lode of nickel, copper and platinum. *10% of the world's nickel is extracted right here in Sudbury. *In 1938, some of Sudbury's nickel was used to help construct the Statue of Liberty. Some was used to build a roof for the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C *in 1963 NASA was trying to re-create the surface of the moon for Apollo astronauts to use for their training... they did it right here in Sudbury (the landscape has changed since then) * In the 1970s, the town had the reputation as the biggest producer of acid rain-causing chemicals in North America. ![]() *The Sudbury Neutrino Labratory (a joint effort between the US, UK and Canada) is located here .. 6800 feet underground in an old mine.SNO I can't think of any famous people that come from here Michelle Wright (country singer) did spend her teenage years here, but that's about it. oh! I almost forgot the most embarassing thing!! ![]() Big Nickel Fast Facts The Big Nickel is the largest coin in the world. It was constructed in 1964. It is an identical, enlarged replica of the 1951 Canadian nickel. Heads is King George VI, Canada’s monarch in 1951. Tails is a stylized nickel refinery with one large stack. The Big Nickel weighs close to 13,000 kilograms (approximately 13 tons). It stands nine metres (30 feet) high. It is 61 centimetres (24 inches) thick. It is about 64,607,747 times the size of a Canadian nickel.

| My hometown, Kajaani, Finland is known for the possibility to flyfish right in the heart of the town by the old Kajaani castle ruins. Yeah, the guys really stand there casting in downtown, and it seems like the tourists find this very exotic. Also, Kajaani is the hometown of the president UKK (he was president for 25 years, no wonder I thought he was the king when I was a kid), and one of the most important poets of our country (Eino Leino), and the writer of our national epic (Elias Lönnrot, Kalevala). Quite a lot of important Finnish literature has been written in my neighborhood, perhaps because there was nothing else to do in the wilderness during the long winter nights.

| The only thing in my hometown that I've ever heard anyone mention was probably known only to Middle Georgians... a really big mill outlet for socks and underwear ![]() Come on folks, there weren't outlet malls on every corner in the early 60's!

| Asheville is famous for being the 'Freak Capital of the US' a few years back. That and we're apparently known because we're a retirement community. Interesting mix, huh? |
