To see if you have the service pack:
    1. Click Start, right-click Computer, and then click Properties.
    2. Look in the Windows Edition section at the top right side of the window. If the service pack is installed, you will see a reference to Windows Vista SP1 displayed.

If you do not have it you can use Windows Update to check for updates (which will include the SP), follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click All Programs, and then click Windows Update.
    2. In the navigation pane, click Check for updates.
    3. After Windows Update has finished checking for updates, click View available updates.
    4. Click to select the check boxes for the updates that you want to install, and then click Install.

Thanks for the detailed explaination ClosetRTWatcher. I do have the SP1..however I'm checking for updates right now. I've heard of so many problems with Vista, I've had mine for over a year now, and I love it. Is this the start of my problems?? hope not :nono

Do your floppy drives still work? mine has become pretty much obsolete. Do they even exist on newer desktops?

The last time i put a floppy in there it asks to format it. Luckily i've moved on to discs and my thumb drive. And yes, i have seen the floppy drives with a usb connection. At this point, i don't think i'll need it.

Does anyone have a reliable link to scan and remove the April 1 virus? I don't think I have it, but would like to check before it can wreak havoc.

canuckinchile: Go to the Windows Security site and search Microsoft Security Bulletin MS08-067, find your operating system and download the patch.

It sounds like most virus scanners can help. Here is the Microsoft fact sheet...

    Hope it helps...

    Re: Computer help desk

Last night, they said that a way to check to see if you have been infected by the virus is to try to go to a web site like Symantec or Norton and that, if you couldn't access that site today, your unit was probably infected. I haven't tried what they said, but I also downloaded the patch. Thanks, bug!

They said that today would be too late to stop the attack, which is why they kept telling us to patch before April 1.

The morning news said that this virus had caused major headaches at CBS(?), taking them about 10 days of multiple techs working 24/7 to resolve the problems caused by Conficker.
