Help... I think I have a Computer Virus

OK, since this morning, everytime I get on line instead of going to MSN (My homepage) I get a few pop up ads and a page that says this:

Message from Internet Service Provider consultant:

This window should NOT remain maximized on most computers.
It is SUPPOSED to remain invisible to launch time-delayed
pop up messages in accordance with an ad-supported software
product that you may have installed on your computer.

If your computer will NOT hide this big white window, you
may have spyware on your system which is interfering with
your ability to control hidden windows. Spyware also sends
you unsolicited advertising, slows down your computer and
could capture private information like credit card numbers
    and social security numbers, etc.

I recommend that you install a "spyware removal" program
so you can rid your computer of these parasites.

    I strongly recommend this link.

P.S. If you are experiencing a higher frequency of pop up
messages, you should definately consider downloading the
spyware removal program. It will remove all of those
    annoying advertisements for good.

Some users have reported that clicking on the white screen
will make the task bar appear below.

Now, being the chicken I am, there is no way I am going wherever it wants me to go. Also, when I click on the description thingy in the task bar (right click to close the window) the whole task bar dissapears. Then I click where the task bar should be and it comes back. The only way I can close the window is to CTRL-ALT-DELETE and choose to stop running that window. Thw only way I can get somewhere else is to stop the page from loading IMMEDIATELY, then choose a location.

Anyone know why this is happening, or what it is?

NO, I don't have a virus protector... I know... :nono

You're right not to click on the link. However, I strongly suggest you get the following two programs: Spybot Seach and Destroy, and Ad-Aware. Scan your computer with them, then run an online virus scan (Symantec offers one for free). That SHOULD work, but I've recently had some spyware on my computer that I was unable to remove with the online scan, Spybot, and Ad-Aware. I ended up having to delete some keys in the Registry.

Cali something like that happened to me in the past too. I didn't have a virus, some page that I had visited had installed it's self as my homepage. I did use the adaware to get rid of what ever was installed and I had to go to my internet tools and reset my homepage.

If it was just that it changed your homepage you won't have to do more, but you should still run ad-aware or another spy removal tool. Having one of them (spyware removal tools) installed on your computer and running it every so often is not a bad thing. Think of it as another form of anti-virus software.

    Hope that helps.

You have a trojan...which commonly will change your homepage.

Recommend the above spyware removal programs. I use Zonealarm and Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy...all free programs. Check out www.downloads.com for other spyware removal programs.

Also, do a "control+alt+delete" and copy down what is running on your task menu. Then visit www.answersthatwork.com and click on task menu. It's a dictionary that explains what programs are running and if they are spyware or viruses. www.computing.net is also a great source of info...just type in whatever is running in the search bar and viola, you should get answers on how to remove. It will also tell you how to remove them. Chances are if your homepage is set to something different, you should go back and change it back...

tools-->internet options--> homepage, and you will also have to remove it from your "msconfig program".

    Hope this helps!

Oooooo...this thread is great!! Thanks for all the info. people! Lately on my home computer, circus-like music will start to play when I only have one web page open or just the FORT open. It's weird. I'm guessin' I've been "infiltrated". :phhht
