Okay, since I've been resurrected, I wanted to resurrect this thread. There are probably a lot of new members since the last post in November! It's worth your time, guys, I promise

So this means they actually have access to my computer in order to use it to process data? I always like to support medical research but I'm not sure this sounds safe....maybe I'll just donate some extra $$$ next time I'm asked for it; I'll ask one of my more tech-y friends before I make a decision.

It like the SETI screensaver.
When your computer is idle, it performs computations and sends it back to the server. In a sense, your computer becomes a part of a big network of computers.

I joined. Most of the work is performed offline and is time intensive. I haven't noticed any real change to my computer's performance, but I did start to lag when playing a multiplayer strategy game late in the game - slamming my processor pretty badly, I guess too many units were in the game for my computer to handle decently.

Athlon 1500+
512 MB RAM
GeForce 4 MX 64mb
40GB HD (2GB max for the agent)
DSL connection.

The actual internet usage is negligible when it sends anything. I have left it running all day/overnight, and it barely takes up any bandwidth because it takes hours to do the computations. When it finishes the computations, it sends one (relatively) small amount of data to their server, receives a new project back from the server, and then disconnects. Your computer slaves all over again over the computations without any interruption from the server.

On my computer, it took maybe 2 minutes for the program to format the data, send it, and receive a project from the server. I went to brush my teeth and when I came back it was already slaving away at a new molecule.

I've had this set up as my screensaver for over seven months with absolutely no problems.

OK, I went to Oxford University's website and made sure this was legit. No offense to anyone but I just like to be certain since I don't actually "know" anyone here. And it wasn't my computer's resources I was worried about, I'm pretty overloaded anyway. Butthere is stuff out there that is ok on 95% of the users who download it while the other few % fall victim to computer hacking, identity theft, etc. Been there done that. So, I had to check it out rather than go by word of mouth.
I'm happy to report that I can feel safe about doing this.

I'm going to test this on all the unmotivated staff's computers to make sure it's virus and hacker safe.
