Linux is what the computer that runs this site is running on. It's good if you know a lot about computers. It's bad if you want point-and-clickability.

Or off-the-shelf applications! I have friends here at work who have linux servers for the family network. I have to get into Unix every now and then at work, but I'm not comfortable enough with it to use it on a regular basis. Our home network is without a server, and my forum is remotely hosted. All I need to manage it is SQL and some PHP. Nothing to worry about, we've just veered off into geekdom again!

Would you folks believe that I just saw a Linux commercial on Bravo last night? Has anyone else seen it with the blonde boy who knew so much?

    Both.
Work: Company Toshiba Portege laptop with docking station.
Home: Custom built desktop from PC Club.

If I'm travelling for business I take the laptop. For mobility when travelling for pleasure, I have a Palm Tungsten W with e-mail and internet access, so I can check up on y'all when I'm away from my computers.

    point-and-clickability.

I'm sure Linux is great - I always liked UNIX, but I'm just to lazy to get involved.

Re. Laptops vs desktop: I prefer laptop since it's easy to bring with me, and it doesn't take any space at home. However, they are expensive (comparatively for what you get) and really not easy to upgrade in any way.

Edited to add: I would never want to have one than one computer to keep track of - I like to have all at one place.

    I use both.

In my home office, I have Compaq desktop and HP desktop systems. When I'm traveling, for business or pleasure, I take my Toshiba laptop and my wi-fi card, hoping to catch a stray signal

I don't use any other electronics on the road except a cellphone. No pda's or anything - it could get way too messy

I personally like using my PDA. The screen gets a crowded sometimes but I like it just fine. I don't own a laptop, but I hope to get one someday.
