    Microsoft updates?

Do you guys download and install the microsoft updates, or do you just click it off and ignore them? What should I do?

If I have nothing better to do, I do the update, if I'm in the middle of something I don't and let my husband deal with it later.

I don't do them, but I apply patches myself for serious holes.

I don't like anything that auto-updates without my knowing exactly what it's doing.

What do you mean by "apply pathces myself for serious holes"?? How do we know if it's a serious hole or not? And what are patches? I don't know all this computer jargon. Can you explain please, thank you.

Well, Microsoft rates security holes based on how serious they are. I use TechNet: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/

By using that, I can see exactly what the fix will actually fix and what else it will do to my system that I may or may not like, and I can decide if it's worth it or not.

Installing "fixes" for WinXP (or any other OS) can also break other things that you had running fine. Since my computer system is my source of income, and I need to be very careful not to break anything I currently have running, I have to take a little more detailed approach to upgrading.

I keep getting emails marked Microsoft Update install immediately.

For just some regular user like myself, what do you suggest I do and which ones I should install??

    John,

I went to this site, which checks for updates from msn:
    http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

    It told me I have
2 critical updates and service packs
    15 windows xp updates
    1 driver updates

Should I update my with the 2 critical updates??

Critical updates are usually for big security holes. You probably should install and run them. It's hard to give a specific recommendation, though, without knowing what exactly the critical updates are for.
