Re: What simple things make you happy?

I remember getting the priviledge of talking with some of the surviving members of The Tuskeegee Airmen, and it was fascinating. All I could keep thinking was that I was interacting with living history....and that these guys wouldn't be around forever. I've never been that crazy about history, but I really got into it that day. Not everybody can know what it is like to deal with people like that, and I am sorry for them, because it's something we should all get to experience. And these guys were tickled to talk about their experiences.

Then there was the 90 year old lady who talked to me about her snuff-dipping habit.....but that's a whole other story......

snuff dipping by women in the first half of the 20th century was fairly common and usually a closely guarded family secret. They might have dipped, but they DID NOT do it in front of company.

That's so cool you got to meet some of the Tuskeegee Airmen. What a great honor.

.
Unless they were Hillbillies like my great aunt, who was having her snuff no matter who was around, or where she was. It wasn't that uncommon to see women dipping snuff even when I was a kid, although I'll admit it was only older ones that did it by that time. And I did mostly see it on the side of my family that was from way back in the hills, even though they lived in 'town' by the time I came along.

I'm getting a smile from picturing my "Aint Emma' on her porch swing, timing her snuff spit with the forward motion to get an expert hit in her spit can every time.
I'm smiling again remembering Aint Emma getting married at *80 years old, after only being married briefly as a young woman.

This was during a summer avaition camp put on by UPS for middle schoolers/high schoolers. I found out that the Airmen were going to be there and I went. I was so excited that I asked more questions than any of the kids did...and they just let me roll on and on!! To this day, I still get excited just remembering it!

My simple pleasure is my husband is out of surgery and even though he is in pain, he sounds like he's doing well!

That's great news, buglover. You must be SO relieved! Now it's a matter of resting, recuperating, and most important, COMING HOME!!!

That's for sure! His mom and dad will take great care of him in my absence so I am grateful for that. He'll be home in 13 days.

Figuring out ways to be self-sufficient. It may take me longer, but at least *I* can do it!
