Thank you. I used to not like that, but now I think its a great compliment to be told I'm like her. I look more like her as I get older. I sometimes startle myself if I catch a glimpse of myself in a window or mirror and I think its her.
She was one fantastic lady. Strong, funny, bawdy and could outcook anyone on the grill. I still miss her BBQ as much as I miss her.
And my memories of today are doubly sad. Remembering all those that died during the 9/11 tragedy and missing my mom. Funny but it was this day that finally reconciled me to her death. She had died in Jan. and I had a hard time with it especially as her birthday approached. But in the days after 9/11 I realized that I had her a long time. I got to be with her as she passed. I got to hold her hand, tell her I loved her and goodbye and when I realized that literally thousands of people did not get to do that on 9/11/01, I realized that I was lucky and from that point on, my grieving for her changed and I was able to overcome it.
Since then, I've met a few people that had babies on 9/11 (I used to work for an OB) and they would say: "Oh that's a terrible day to be born" and I would say: "no its not. One of the greatest women I ever knew was born on that day"
Here's to all the families still coping with grief and here's to all the babies born on 9/11, its a great birthday to have, no matter what else has happened on that day, because to be born is to be alive and we should celebrate life especially on this day, while we mourn those that passed.
