The sarcastic side of me wants to blurt out: "No, I was really looking for true love and life fulfillment, but I had to settle on this dented box of Rasin Bran, thank you for depressing me further..."

I agree with those who've said how much they enjoy your sense of humor here, Bill!

As for me, sometimes I'll actually respond to the "Did you find everything alright?" question with "Well, no; I couldn't find the pot of gold I was looking for." Sometimes I get really confused looks back, as though I overloaded their synapses by not just saying "Yes".

I think you are right Wayner, the simple answer beyond YES is very unnerving to some of them.

Of course all of this leads to the pinnacle of american culture:

(Since I'm not American, I don't dare to write those things...)

Re. replying to cashiers... It's a bit too easy to make fun of them, imo. I would hate to have their job, and I would probably also put myself in some trance and behave like a mindless robot. If the cashier is in that state, it is almost mean to give the "wrong" answer. However, as I wrote above, there are some exceptions (rare though), when you know you can give that kind of reply and get a response like "what? huh? oh??!! " and you can both have a good laugh about it.
Just my opinion of course - as always

Bill! You brought me to another topic that bugs me! Why don't places just have small, medium, and large beverages anymore?

No, that would be too simple. I can have a regular, not a small. I can have a large, which isn't really a large - that's "VALUE sized" or something. If I want large I need to order JUMBO sized.

At Starbucks I can get a tall, which isn't really tall, it's small. I can get a grande, which isn't really grande at all - it's medium. What the hell is VENTE?

    Stop the insanity!

As far as people telling you their problem: Right now, I'm a 2nd year student of psychology (going into child psych) and EVERYONE thinks that gives them a license to just spill their guts to me at any time. I don't want to hear it! No, with my close friends or even relatives, I dont mind. But aquaintances, after asking my major, proceed to ask me for psychological advice. :rolleyes Now, i don't ALWAYS mind, but when I'm in public (as in not online) and someone is holding me up, I get annoyed.

I HATE when people talk on cell phones while driving.

Oh Wayner, that bugs the crap out of me!
I went to a FF place not long ago and asked for a small fries. The cashier said "we don't have small"

I asked what the smallest one was and was told for adults its a medium, kor kids it's a kiddie. She had to ask her manager if she could sell me a kiddie fries!

Good grief! You're lucky she did say "Kiddie fries? I'm sorry, I'm gonna have to card you."
