I've always said that Sarcasm, like herpes is a gift that keeps on giving... and about as nice to receive.

I'll try and get this thread back on topic.

First, Brenna, lovely drawings as always. Fantastic.

A poetic interpretation of sorts of a Russell Banks short story "The Child Screams and looks back at you. Best read to Nature Boy playing in the background (that's how I read it for the class I wrote it for. )

    "Not"

    I am a child,
alone in my room, my world.
    But...
    but I am not afraid.

    A woman stands over me,
a look of concern washed over her mute, blank face.
She talks to me in foreign languages,
    "Como es usted?"
    "Il mio bambino."
I know not what she speaks.
    But...
    but I am not afraid.

    My whole body burns
like a grocery store parking lot in the middle of July.
I wish I had my shoes on,
    so I could run
into the wintry, wonderful produce section,
filled with baby carrots, purple cabbage and oversized watermelon.
    Then...
then I might not be afraid.

An invitation appears on the cracked dirty white ceiling
my glossy eyes have been staring at for
    two days straight.
    We can let you out.
    You can be free.
    Of pain.
    Sorrow.
Of all the hurt this world brings.
    Come.
    Come with us it says.
    It allures me.
    I want to go.
    Then...
then I might not be afraid.

    The woman.
    She invades me
    and
    my solitude.
    An unintelligible blast,
    like a foghorn,
    escapes my dying throat
    and
    much to my delight,
    she magically disappears.
    And...
    and I am not afraid.

As if it were the end of some sad movie,
    everything fades to black,
a sable shade of darkness unlike any other.
    And now...
    I cannot see,
    feel,
    laugh,
    smile,
    hurt,
    cry.
    And...
    and I am not alone.
I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star in somebody else's eyes... but why... why... why can't it be me?

Thanks for the compliments Unexplained and Hazy!! As always, feedback is appreciated

I really like your poem, hazy. You're really talented. So many talented Fort poets!! I used to want to be a writer before I realized that I wasn't very talented in that area!!

I downloaded Nature Boy just to get the full effect of your poem! It works really well with it. Just out of curiosity, which version of Nature Boy did you play? I never knew there were so many versions. I went with Bowie.

The Bowie one is the one I used.

There are some great classic versions, though, I just had the Moulin Rouge soundtrack so it was readily available to me.

Have you ever hurt so much that it wasnít enough?

    He hurt me.
    But itís not enough.

I want to stretch it out
    As far as I can.
    Find extra pieces
To add to my patchwork of pain.
And then roll myself up in it
    Until I suffocate.
    Surrounded
    In
    Not
    Enough.
