Father's Day was the idea of Sonora Dodd of Spokane, Washington. She conceived the idea in 1909 while listening to a Mother's Day speech. She wanted to honor her father, William Smart, a Civil War veteran who raised his six children on a farm.

In 1910, the mayor of Spokane chose June 19th for the first Father's Day celebration. The mayor chose June because it was the month when William Smart was born.

President Lyndon Johnson proclaimed the third Sunday in June as the official Father's Day in 1966. President Nixon made it permanent in 1972.
