Sounds kind of working class, like Springsteen or John Cougar but nothing's coming to me. Any hints?

Song is from early 1970's. Group broke-up and didnt speak for many years. They recently reunited and are currently touring.

OK - I had to listen to my whole Simon and Garfunkle album before I came to it - The Boxer.

Hey - in one of the Gen. Discussion threads, you were berating today's female singers for acting like sluts, and then you give me a lyric with the word "whores" in it! :nono

Here's a quickie: "And the operator says '40 cents more for the next 3 minutes'".

Interesting correlation you make there my friend.

Well...The best way to explain the difference between the two would be:

In the song "The Boxer" , Paul Simon is using the word "whore" to describe a very real life experience someone living on the poor side of town would likely experience walking down the street - specifically; being propositioned by a street prostitute.

Its also likely something that personally happened to Paul Simon -who grew up in New York City...heck, its happened to me growing up in Chicago...he could just as easily have said that he was approached by a drug dealer...or a homeless person looking for a hand out or any other type of encounter one might have on the city streets.

The song is a cold and true biting commentary on the life of a down and out club fighter, way past his prime and at a cross roads in his life. He laments to being propositioned by street whores and admits that, on occassion, he has in fact been with these prostitutes as a way to seek some temporary comfort from his miserable existence.

That is a heck of a lot different than a surgically enhanced pop-tart sexing herself up and dancing around 3/4 naked to sell dance-tune CD's.

Ah but its all good. That is the true beauty of music and critiqueing it and its creators. Its all relative. :-)
