Tips for Vegas Virgins

I'm curious--how many FORTcon attendees have been to vegas before, and how many haven't?
Anyway, I thought I'd start this thread to help any Vegas Virgins get a feel for the place before Friday. Here's my top three tips.

1) Don't be afraid to be seen drinking at 8 am or whatever time you prefer to start. After all, it's past noon somewhere.

2) Join the slot club at your favorite casino so you can get a free meal if you lose all your cash gambling. If you don't care to waste time eating, you can probably qualify for a free baseball cap or cheesy t-shirt after only a hundred dollars worth of play!

3) Last but not least, those boxes you see on every corner that are marked "free, take one" are NOT real etate books, free newspapers, or calendars of events; proceed with caution if you embarrass easily!

Been there, but it has been years.

Let me add to this with...if someone tries to hand you a flier don't take it if you embarass easily.

4) If you take a cab on the strip, close your eyes and don't watch him drive. They drive fast and not very safely.

I have only been once as well.
The guys on the street with those cards -
The people I was with were collecting them like baseball cards. No baseball stars on those cards let me say!

I found it interesting how you never feel tired in Vegas - no matter how little sleep you get. People claim that pure oxygen is blown into the casinos, and I don't know if that is true or not. If it is, why don't we have that blown into our cubicals here at work?

Been there three times before for business...it's one of a kind, that's for sure...everything in excess.

Tips I'll add....

1) Be prepared to be hot if you're not used to the heat; and it's a dry heat which means that you'll likely find yourself feeling thirsty and mixed with the altitude changes (especially if you're from the humid and pancake flat south like me ) your nose will feel really dry and stuffy. Bring lotion.

2) Bring comfy shoes because the strip means a lot of walking. You'll find that you can move around better on foot than in the congested traffic.

3) Vegas is full of visually stunning attractions, but must sees: Bellagio Fountain and indoor flower garden, Caesars Forum Shops, Venetian gondolas, Paris' Eiffel Tower replica

Don't forget about Ceasars - all of it! Go inside - take your time and take a camera!
My favorite store - M&Ms store - all 4 floors of my favorite candy!

My friend and I were collecting them as well for kicks....ok, for that and the fact that a guy I work with asked me to bring him home a collection of "stripper cards" so it was a fun little game to see how many we could collect during our stay. Amazingly we actually found ONE male card in our huge stack of them, that one I kept for fun cause it was so odd.

I was truly amazed at how much junk paper would end up in my pockets by the end of the day walking down the strip, never can you believe how many handbills you'll get if you are too polite (like me) and just take them all.

4) Carry a BUNCH of one dollar bills; everyone here wants a tip, but a buck is usually a good amount, for the 'free' drinks, the valet at the parking garage (worth the buck to skip the walk--parking is free, less tthis tip.) and miscellaneous other stuff--$1 is usually the price if you don't know and they have a hand stuck out.
5)If you have occasion to ride in a cab, tell them to go down Industrial Road ; it parallels the strip and has less traffic, so you don't pay for the meter to run.

Re: Tips for Vegas Virgins

Stay where you want to play

If you want to gamble downtown, book a room off the Strip. If you think you're going to spend most of your time at Hard Rock, look in to staying there or somewhere else on Paradise Road. If you're not much of a gambler, go with a nongaming property like Ritz-Carlton or Renaissance Las Vegas.
Learn your hotel's shortcuts

Huge megaresorts can feel like cities within cities and be noisy, chaotic, and challenging to navigate. Avoid trekking all over your hotel by asking for a room near an elevator.
Break for high culture

For a reprieve from the lowbrow Strip, peek into the Guggenheim-Hermitage Museum at the Venetian. The museum showcases special exhibitions as well as art pulled from three of the world's most revered permanent collections -- the Guggenheim, in New York; the Hermitage, in St. Petersburg; and the Kunsthistorisches, in Vienna.
