True — it's a lot better than most of what's out there.
(Tastes pretty good, too — I tried the in-store samples at my IGA.)

I had the bottle of mango juice mixed with seltzer and that was very good! I like that seltzer gives me carbonation like the soft drinks I love but without the extra sugar and calories. Thanks for recommending it, beerbelly!

I think I'll look around the store the next time I go grocery shopping to see what's available. I've heard of horchata but never tried it so I might consider that.
I like the flavored 'Zero Water', pikachu. The flavors I like in particular, are the fruit punch, lemonade and orange ones. They're refreshing, not overly sweet and filled with good-for-you vitamins.

Even without added sugar, fruit juices can have a TON of sugar. Like up to 30+g per 8 oz. serving, which is the equivalent of nearly 8 teaspoons of sugar (Coke has 39g per 12 oz). Just read the labels to be sure.

I'm reading Sugar Salt Fat: How the Food Giants Hooked Us by Michael Moss right now and just read about a study where subjects were given infusions of liquid sucrose and, in spite of the increase in sugar and calories, they ate no differently. Basically, this suggests that the body doesn't register those liquid calories the way it registers solid food. The subjects ate the same diet they would have if they'd been drinking non-caloric beverages (ie, the increase in calories from liquid didn't change their appetite). BTW - I'm only about 25 pages into the book, but I highly recommend it. It's definitely making me glad I don't eat a lot of pre-packaged foods!

Ariel - my mom drinks a glass of Cranberry juice every day. I don't like Splenda (it makes my tongue tingle in a weird way), which is what they sweeten the diet stuff with, so when she visits, she gets the regular juice so that, if there's any left over, I'll drink it (I usually leave it for the next time she visits. It's amazing - and sort of scary - how long that stuff lasts). One time, we bought what was labeled as Cranberry Apple juice and it tasted like apple juice. It's like they colored apple juice with cranberry juice. I will say that, I bought unsweetened cranberry juice once and it was horrid. SO bitter.

Gut - I really like cucumber in my water. It's so refreshing. I never get lemon when I'm out, partly because I don't like the taste, but also because I read that many restaurants don't wash the lemons before cutting them up to put in water and tea so, yeah, gross.

I agree, bad news. I love orange juice but I won't go near it any more. Or apple juice. Whole fruits now.

Good book. I've been reading a lot about the food industry and what the food scientists have accomplished. Scary. More and more I'm exploring ways to avoid processed foods.

I really can't drink fruit juice at all. It makes me sick to my stomach, probably because of the acidity and all the sugar. It used to bum me out, but now I'm glad! I don't want to drink my calories and it's easy to avoid stuff like juice and soda because they make me feel sick. I was shocked when I did some reading and checked labels on various "healthy" drinks and saw the sugar content. It's pretty horrifying.

    Re: Beverages

I actually like straight-up, unsweetened cranberry juice. Even better infused overnight with orange zest or lime zest. No sugar. I like sour. Ever since my gastric bypass over a decade ago, I'm not a fan of sweet. (Dumping syndrome — not pretty, but great aversion therapy! Cured me of my sugar addiction forever!)

I love unsweetened iced teas/tisanes. (Sweet tea? Blecccchhhhhhh!!!!!!! Hate it!!!) They're my summer go-to.

    Re: Beverages

I don't like really sweet drinks (except maybe the occasional hot cocoa in the winter), but the unsweetened cranberry juice was too much for me. Too sour and too intense. I prefer water and tea. I do sweeten my tea, but it's maybe 1/2t of sugar in my hot tea and a packet of Equal in a big tumbler - like 30+oz - in my iced tea. It's really subtle.

I can't stomach sweet tea. It's like drinking simple syrup. I really like McDonald's iced tea - it's pretty much the only thing I'll buy there - and they've accidentally given me sweet tea instead on two occasions. It was horrid. Luckily, I always check before i drive off, so I caught it both times. Once, they put the wrong tea in the carafe and it was diet raspberry sweet tea instead of regular unsweetened. It was beyond awful. I just don't find sweet drinks very refreshing.

At home, I brew either green or white tea in small batches so I can have a variety. I really like Yogi Kombucha Green Tea right now. It's probably my favorite. I always have a water bottle next to me and I refill it several times a day.

    Re: Beverages

I just tried my first Coconut Water today. It's organic and called Guiltless Gourmet by the Manischewitz Co. It's a little salty tasting, IMO, but it's pretty good otherwise. The sodium content is actually low.

Does anyone know the safety of coconut water? I picked up cans where it was distributed from Vietnam, Thailand, etc. Is it safe? I know they don't necessarily have the requirements on food that we do. The can I have is from NJ, but the product is from Sri Lanka.
