| Re: Crockpot recipes Well thank you MRD. I'm glad you like it. Maybe we'll all get some good cholesteral numbers next checkup.. I'll try it with the pumpkin pie spice, sounds yummy. And some sugar-free syrup too.

Anyone know if there is a maple syrup flavoring agent out there?

| Re: Crockpot recipes I know that there is a flavoring. I think McCormick makes it. However, I think it may be artificially flavored. Can't really recall. |

| Re: Crockpot recipes I think you're right. I've used McCormick's, and just checked my Mapeline bottle, and it's labeled as immitation flavoring, too. But I'd bet you could find the real deal pretty easily at a more "wholesome" grocery. These oatmeal flavor combos you all are coming up with sound so good. ![]()

| Re: Crockpot recipes Most of the maple-esque flavorings/extracts I've seen are artificial. I like to use real, honest-to-god, 100% natural maple syrup. The flavor of the real stuff is so strong that I don't need much of it; therefore, calories are minimal. (I don't use artificial sweeteners at all anymore; I've just gotten used to using significantly less of the real thing and, consequently, liking things less sweet. It took awhile, though!)

| Re: Crockpot recipes I'm with you Ellen - I'd rather use less of the real thing. It drives my hubby crazy because I use real butter and sugar instead of margarine and splenda... he just doesn't get my way of thinking at all .Anyway, I tried steelcut oatmeal for the 3rd time today, and I finally got it! Thank you all so much for the recommendations! I used too much brown sugar, but it was MUCH better than using not enough lol. I'm so happy I stuck with it! |

| Re: Crockpot recipes If you don't use enough, you can add a bit more in before serving. I had to do that the first time I made it. Adding it in at the end seems to work out ok

| Re: Crockpot recipes An alternative sweetener for oatmeal (which I use every morning) is raisins. I have mix my oatmeal with the raisins, goji berries, ground flax and a bit of ten-grain cereal. I don't use any sweeteners, salt or butter, and it is still delicious. If I'm feeling particularly festive, I might add some dried mulberries or strawberries.

| Re: Crockpot recipes I started getting sick Thursday, so I made chicken soup in my crockpot today. I've been really into my new craze of blendered raw fruits/veggies (which actually knocked out 90% of the illness already), so I cleared off the table and reorganized my freezer and fridge. All the marginal and half-used bags of veggies went into the soup, so it is an unusual mix of corn, lima beans, and brussels sprouts. I'll let you know how that goes.

I've done that many times, and probably have not made the same thing twice! This was my latest "Everything in the Fridge" the other day. I had some left over whole cooked potates, and half a bag of baby carrots that were used for a dip a few weeks ago. I put them in the bottom of my crock pot, topped it with four frozen italian sausages, added a couple of cups of water and went to work. There's nothing like walking in the house and smelling food cooking! I love my crockpot! I've been using mine for years.
