What's in a Watergate salad? Shredded documents? :winkgrin
I have to teach on T'giving day. It's been an exhausting semester, and the hubs is getting over one of thse "cough up a lung" colds, so we're keeping it simple and low-key:
grilled turkey cutlets with cranberry/Asian pear/pecan salsa
multi-grain croissants
butternut squash soup
Jack Daniels cranberries
maple pumpkin pie
wine, most definitely

Jack Daniel's cranberries? Can you share the recipe?

Sure! It's disgustingly easy:
Ingredients:
bag of fresh cranberries (rinsed well)
2/3 cup orange juice (freshly squeezed, if available)
zest of one orange (great, if available, but no big deal if not)
1/3 cup Jack Daniels
3/4 cup turbinado sugar
Pour OJ, booze, and sugar into a medium saucepan; stir to dissolve sugar. Bring to boil. Add cranberries and orange zest. Bring back to boil; then bring down to simmer. When cranberries start to pop, remove from heat and allow to cool. Sauce will thicken upon cooling. If you prefer cold cranberries, put them in the fridge. I like 'em at room temp.
Leftovers make a nice topping for pancakes, waffles, or French toast.
If you don't have JD, bourbon or rum works well, too.

I am vegetarian. My favorites are mash potatoes, casseroles and pumpkin pie.....I already feel the Christmas food bender coming on.
Re: Let's Talk Turkey-Thanksgiving
Hmmm, since I'm having a smallish group this year, I think I'll add a spinach souffle - it's hard to do for a large group, but we're only having 6 or 7. Love it!
Re: Let's Talk Turkey-Thanksgiving
Thanks for the recipe Ellen, I'm going to give it a try! :-)

Oh, it's so good, we can't keep it around when I make it! It's more than a salad, almost a dessert! At least it is around my house :P
a large container of cool whip, a box of instant pistachio pudding, 1 cup crushed pineapple, 1 cup miniature marshmallows, 2 bananas sliced, slivered almonds (optional)
Combine the cool whip and pudding, fold in the pineapple, then the marshmallow, then the bananas...top with slivered almonds if desired. Cover and refrigerate (gets better with time, if it lasts long enough :lol)
If anyone has a different recipe, I'd love to see it! I believe it was invented at the Watergate Hotel, yes?
Re: Let's Talk Turkey-Thanksgiving
I put pecans in mine and leave out the banana. The recipe I have doesn't call for banana.

Just did a quick search for Watergate Salad - the origin of the name is obscure, according to Wiki. - the recipe appeared after pistachio pudding was invented/produced by Kraft.
There a variations, but most of the ones I saw don't include the banana and have walnuts instead of pecans or almonds. Since there's almond in the pistachio pudding, perhaps that's where our family recipe included them. Variations include "other things" - such as mandarin oranges instead of the pineapple (hmmmm, don't know if I'd like that myself). We've had this recipe since as long as I can remember - try it with bananas sometime! I'll try pecans :)
Any other variations?
Re: Let's Talk Turkey-Thanksgiving
The recipe for watergate salad is right on the jello brand pistachio pudding box. I always add a can of mandarin orange slice and a can of fruit cocktail. I omit the nuts. I don't use bananas, but I don't think they are called for in the recipe.
