What Are You Known For

We all, most likely, have something that we make and people look forward to or ask about. What is it that you are known for?

I'm probably known for my Christmas cookies. I bake tons of different kinds and give them out as gifts over the holidays. A few months before the season, people ask if they are on the cookie list and if they are getting a tin. I love baking them and taking the time to make sure they look great.

In general, I love to bake and that is probably what most people think of when they think about me. I also love to cook, but I generally don't have people over for dinner, all that often. If I'm going to cook something, I usually cook some homemade Italian from a family recipe.

Re: What Are You Known For

My two requested items that I make for nearly everything these days (because people ask.. not because I'm in a rut ) are my Giant Cream Puff and Cherry Cheesecake Bars.

The Cherry Cheesecake Bar recipe can be found on the back of a Betty Crocker Cherry Chip cake mix... so it isn't rocket science, but people just love it. Yes, I do tell them where I got the recipe, but it doesn't seem to matter.

Happy Birthday, cookiegirl!

guacamole. everyone loves my guacamole and asks for the recipe, and then complains that it didn't turn out like mine. I think people try to substitute salsa for the pico de gallo and then it always turns out funny. You NEED to use the pico de gallo! No substitutes!

And tacos, pasta sauces.

Although I make many recipes that are much more complex and to me better tasting, when there are functions at church I am frequently asked to bring either my orange jello or my brownies. I don't mind because they are both so easy. The orange jello simply has mandarin oranges added with dream whip on top. The brownies are a Duncan Hines or Giant Eagle fudge brownie mix with chocolate chips added and deliberately just under baked. This one lady in particular goes on and on about them.

mmm . . . cherry cheesecake bars

People have been known to kill for my potato salad and for my Scandinavian blueberry-yogurt pie. I also make a pretty fair baklava, but I don't get much call for that.

Re: What Are You Known For

The stuff I'm known for I find quite boring and have better things that I make but people always want my dump cake. You know, the cake you make with crushed pineapple, cherry pie filling and yellow cake mix. It's good but like I said, my mac and cheese and lasagna are so much better

Re: What Are You Known For

I hope everyone who posts something they are known for will also go post the recipe in the recipe thread . I like everything posted so far and am craving some good cookies, giant cream puff (will get the cherry cheesecake bar from the box as suggested), guacamole (), brownies (how long underbaked?), potato salad and Scandinavian blueberry-yogurt pie, dump cake (and karna I'd love to know how you make your mac and cheese and lasagna, which are two of my favorite foods).

I'm not really known for anything because I hardly ever get anything to come out the same way twice. My husband and son love my cooking and I do an okay squash casserole or mac and cheese but they never quite come out the same each time. I don't cook too much for anyone outside the family. I've always been self-conscious because when I show up with my dish, inevitably everyone raves on and on about something someone else has brought. I took some artichoke dip to a gathering recently and another person brought stuffed mushrooms. All night I heard how those were the "best stuffed mushrooms they ever tasted." One person had never even heard of artichokes so I knew that wasn't a good sign at that point. I did get some compliments but nothing on the level of the "best mushrooms ever!"

I'd really like to master stuffed mushrooms (my past attempts have had so-so results) so if anyone has a good tried and true for that please post in the recipes thread. I don't care too much for sausage in them (which the ones at the party had) but can adapt the recipe if necessary.

Re: What Are You Known For

At holiday time I'm known for my fudge and toffee, and I used to be known for my Hot Pepper Jam. I don't make it anymore since I no longer have a vegetable garden, but when I was still doing craft shows I used to sell tons of it.

Re: What Are You Known For

Fried chicken and potato salad (although the recipe for THAT originated from a friend) and for easy ecclair dessert. But I'm asked to bring the dessert and potato salad to functions and my friends always ask when I'm going to make fried chicken.

Where do you get the Cherry Chip cake mix? I've tried for years in both Florida and SC and can't get it. I've even looked on line. I love the cherry chip cake mix and have not had it for YEARS.

Archie, I've got a good stuffed mushroom recipe. I'll go dig it out and post it.

Re: What Are You Known For

I'm known for my Thanksgiving dinners. But really the people I cook for will eat just about anything and love it. It is gratifiying.
