Re: What Are You Known For

I'm known for my yeast rolls (my mom's recipe, actually) and my chocolate cake. Actually, Mr. C thinks it's his chocolate cake - as it was his recipe originally - but he always volunteered me to make it. Now everyone calls it "my" cake, since they've never known him to make it. Kinda irks him a little bit sometimes . . . but I tell him it's his own fault!

Now the rolls . . . oh my - they are divine! I've told my girls that I'll pass the recipe down to them only on their sworn word that they'll never give it out! I'm sure it's not a big secret - it's not like my mom created the recipe or anything . . . but I like the idea of passing down a family recipe and the girls seem taken with the whole "mystique" of it all. Hey - I'll do anything that will excite them about cooking!

Re: What Are You Known For

Hmmm....I am definitely known for my Death by Chocolate. Every time I go somewhere, someone always asks for it. My cheesecake is requested as well, but it's so easy to do I'm embarassed to take so much credit for it I am also known for a good layered dip I make during Football season for my husband & the guys when they come over. As far as "food-food" and not snacks/desserts, my signature dish lately has been chicken francaise. Yum.

Personally, I enjoy baking the best. However, I've changed my habits and just don't eat that stuff like I used to and I truly miss baking. I still do it sometimes, but I don't have the willpower to have it in the house and not eat it. I do it a lot at Christmas for gifts (breads and cookies). We also get together (me & mom & sisters) to make a bazillion christmas cookies and that's always so much fun.

Re: What Are You Known For

Deviled eggs. They are a family tradition with my family. Every family gathering, we have a platter of deviled eggs. And I am usually the one to make them. I always slice the eggs when they're still pretty warm, and mix the yolk mixture up then, so it's nice and creamy with no lumps. The last time I made them, I used grey poupon (the only mustard available at the time) and a packet of individual cream cheese. It added a nice extra creaminess to it.

Re: What Are You Known For

My "signature dish" is pan-seared salmon with roasted vegetable couscous.

I'm also known for my lasagna (I make the sauce myself), quiche, and risotto.

That sounds really good. Could you post the recipe in the recipe thread, please?

Re: What Are You Known For

i'm known for nefla soup, corn chowder and gravy which is funny because i can never get anything to come out the same way twice. My monster inlaw taught me that when handing out a signature recipe to friends and family that could be attending same event in the future, to omit one ingredient or step making sure that your dish, should friend or family show up with the same thing, is always BETTER. she didn't tell me this, i had to learn the hard way, but i got her back the same way. It is cut throat around here with recipes, heck I found out a couple years ago my very own beloved mother had been doing the same thing to me for years! I don't even bring their recipes to functions, i found out because hubby kept saying my stuff didn't taste the same as his or my mother's stuff - that, when i do all the cooking is WAR at my house!
Now i get the recipe and spy on them while they are making it!

OMG! That's too funny!

I'd never even think about leaving something out so mine would taste better. Hmm, you've given me ideas.

This would actually require me sitting down and measuring things out and writing them down. The recipe's all in my head... does that make sense?

The next time I make it, I'll have to write it out as I go along, and then I can have it for my records (and also post it on here).

Re: What Are You Known For

That makes sense to me, thetortfeaser, because my mom cooked that way, too ...
I'm also guilty of the "changing" recipes before giving them out, but not often. My favorite was my banana bread recipe; I added an extra banana. When I gave my (at the time) father-in-law the recipe I didn't mention the extra banana. He couldn't understand why the family liked mine better. He even changed the plates they were on so his kids would like HIS better, but they caught on pretty quickly...

Now, on the topic - I am asked to make lasagna and enchiladas quite often, and for pot-lucks I bring pasta salad.

Re: What Are You Known For

Wow, I would never omit an ingredient when I share a recipe. I think it is a great compliment when you share a great recipe and they love it and use it often. I always make my recipes with love so in my opinion, it always come out great!!! LOL!!
I get such a good feeling when someone calls me and says "I tried your recipe and OMG, it was sooooo good", or at a gathering you are credited for a great dish.
