    Pop, Soda or Coke?

What's it called where you live? Here's a fun "Generic Names for Soft Drinks" map that breaks it down by counties. We call it "pop" here in eastern Nebraska.

Canadians call it "pop", which I always thought of as a Canadianism until I read an interview with Paul Feig, the creator of my favourite show ever, Freaks & Geeks. The reason I assumed that pop was Canadian and soda was U.S. was because you almost invariably hear it referred to as soda on U.S. television shows. On F&G, however, it was always referred to as pop, which Mr. Feig said is what that called in Michigan, where he grew up. And as the show was loosely based on his experiences and was set in the area where he grew up (a suburb of Detroit, I believe), pop is what the characters on the show called it. Since so many shows are set in (or at least filmed in) California and are written by California residents, it stands to reason that the terminology would be Californian.

It's always been pop in the Pacific Northwest. I went to college in the Boston area. At least back then, it was "tonic" there. I didn't notice an other on the map though.

Oh, and one of the things they warned all us poor naive non-Massachusetts natives about was that a milkshake there was literally milk shaken with syrup as opposed to an ice cream based treat. If you wanted what I have also thought of as a milkshake, you had to order a "frappe."

Pop here in Michigan. I live in GA for a year and it was soda down there. I worked with kids and they thought it was hilarious when I called it pop.

I refer to it mostly as beverage. As in "would you like a beverage" lol drives my kids batty.
